Honestly, I’m most excited to see if those leaks we saw last week or the week before are actually true or not. Looks like they are to an extent, but I want to know for sure

[–]Monog0n[S] 187 points188 points  (5 children)

The article is kinda answering that question:

The specific theme shown off in the leaked images may be called “Silk”, and it could serve as Google’s representation for Android 12’s enhanced theming system.

[–]ok___google 78 points79 points  (2 children)

Yeah I know. I just want to see the final product and how it compares to the leaks

[–]Ph0XPixel 5 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well we might get to see some of it by the time developer builds come around in march or so, but even then, it'll usually go through a lot of improvements until release around august.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just hope it won't be a confusing mess like their new icons.

[–]Dr_imfullofshitiPhone XS, Pixel OG, Nexus 6p, Nexus 5, Droid Charge, OG Droid 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Guessing it's kinda like the icon/theme thing they have now, where you can choose a different theme and they all have some names?

[–]Monog0n[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently Android 12 will bring a more complex theming system. It will maybe replace that "Style" feature that was on Pixel phones.

[–]-NotEnoughMinerals 40 points41 points  (9 children)

I've been ootl, care to drop a link of what you're referencing? Would love to see.

[–]ok___google 35 points36 points  (8 children)

Yeah it’s this post. The article in this current thread is basically a more in depth look at those leaks

[–]ObsiArmyBest 7 points8 points  (6 children)

We're going back to tiles?

[–]Dr_imfullofshitiPhone XS, Pixel OG, Nexus 6p, Nexus 5, Droid Charge, OG Droid 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Based on the article, kinda sounds like these are Android's answer to Apple's widgets, but are treating them more like windowed views of an app- which would be way better than apple's implementation

[–]BrownThunderMK 9 points10 points  (1 child)

cries in windows phone

[–]PhilbeeyYou Can Clap Now 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kept using one stubbornly for my home country phone number for a while.

I loved it until the day it truly truly just lost all semblance of being usable after the abandonment and EOL.

A phone ahead of its time and so useable and enjoyable.

Windows ecosystem was a mess hit promising then to.

A shame, a crying shame.

[–]luca020400LineageOS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The leaks are likely early mockups of the theme called Silk for what I could collaborate.

They're currently writing it as a demo/shell app standalone to showcase the new layout currently.

Later on I guess they'll merge the custom app inside the standard SystemUI.

[–]juan_x_ito 7 points8 points  (2 children)

same it looked so pleasing and beautiful 🤌🏼

[–]juan_x_ito 23 points24 points  (1 child)

i hope they google-fy it a little because it looks a little too ONE UI-ish

[–]UESPA_SputnikPixel 7 Pro 131 points132 points  (17 children)

A few of the in-development changes include shifting the notification icons for the Always on Display so they are no longer centered in the new layout

I like them centered. :( I think I saw them on the top left on Samsung phones, and it looked really odd to me.

[–]PopDownBlocker 75 points76 points  (8 children)

With Samsung's Good Lock, you can customize the whole look of the AOD. Even with the visual changes in every new Android version, Samsung still gives you customization options to maintain the old look of things, if you prefer.

I still keep my clock to the right like it was with Oreo.

[–]Flying_MomoS10 9 points10 points  (3 children)

which Module let's you change AOD?

[–]Legin15 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Clockface. When clicked on it asks if you want to change AOD or Lockscreen

[–]Flying_MomoS10 7 points8 points  (1 child)

thanks

[–]omgitzmoDevice, Software !! 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also you don’t need to use Clockface to centre the clock, you can go into Lock Screen settings and there’s about 5 or 8 clock styles to choose from.

[–]dvorahkiin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought Goodlock was overhyped by this subreddit till I got a Samsung phone myself. Now my keyboard is hot pink and has a bubble effect on touch, my notification panel is violet and the transparency is custom modified along with the icons, my lock screen wallpapers change every time I unlock my phone, my on screen buttons are cats, in addition to myriad other visual tweaks. It is quite good. My only issue is multistar won't work after my 3.0 update, I've updated the app, but I just can't figure out how to do splitscreen.

[–]hurricane_newsSamsung M30s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With Samsung's Good Lock, y

Tfw I have m series and thus no good lock support

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The notification icons on the AoD have always been centered. OneUI 3.0 also center-aligned them on the lockscreen.

[–]mehdotdotdotdot 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Cool thing about Samsung, is you can actually customise it all, unlike locked down pixels

[–]PraetorJP 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I suspect you're joking.. but you should also know that goodlock isn't available everywhere in the world.

No option for it here in South Africa

[–]mehdotdotdotdot 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Side load?

[–]PraetorJP -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

Certainly an option.. it's just a ballache that I have to do that instead of it just being made available

[–]mehdotdotdotdot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty freaking easy to do.

[–]Marvos 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's not available in my country either, but here's how I load it anyway:

  • Eject your SIM card.

  • Install VPN app and connect to US (I use VPN Hub and connect to Dallas, US).

  • Find Galaxy Store app on your phone, open its app info, select Storage, and "Clear data".

  • Open Galaxy Store and install GoodLock.

  • Open GoodLock and install all modules you want.

  • Disconnect from VPN.

  • Insert SIM card back.

  • Optionally reboot.

Works as it should :)

Update every now and then using the same method.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Or you can sideload it from APK Mirror. Much easier.

[–]kbtech 278 points279 points  (63 children)

[–]Elephant789Pixel 3aXL 7 points8 points  (2 children)

They weren't wrong though. IOS is still as ugly today as ever.

[–]erwan 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Android also has some major evolutions in the right direction.

- Until Gingerbread (2.3) it looked really amateurish
- Holo (4.0) was a real step forward
- 5.0 brought material design and while some preferred Holo it was mostly accepted as much better
- Then dark theme arrived, that was also really nice for those who like it (me included)

Then we get minor changes right or left, some good some bad so it mostly come to preferences, resistance to change or attractiveness of new stuff...

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only UI design change I didn't like was Oreo, everything was white and there were a lot of useless changes just for the sake of change, Nougat was better. Other than that, I like stock/Pixel Android's look.

[–]leglessnograd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie I hated ios7 back when we had iPhones, I loved material at first even despite how god awful clunky it was.

[–]OpexLiFTGalaxy S10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]noneym86Fold5, 15 Pro Max, S23 7 points8 points  (22 children)

And people will realize Android is generally way cheaper than iPhone so they will claim they don't want to be tied to a walled garden anyway to make themselves feel better.

[–]pineappolisiPhone 13 Pro // Galaxy S21 20 points21 points  (20 children)

The walled garden sucks, coming from someone that owns an 11 Pro Max. I’ll go back to Android once I find an appealing phone.

[–]ok___google 10 points11 points  (12 children)

Controversial and extremely unpopular opinion: I like the ecosystem and it’s my favorite part of Apple products

[–]-Rivox-Pocophone F1 12 points13 points  (10 children)

The main issue IMO is that it only works if all you use is Apple products. The moment you get something else, you'll get a really bad experience.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (6 children)

I have a iPhone 12 mini, use surface headphones, Galaxy Buds Live, a Windows 10 on ARM tablet, and also use a Tab S6 and iPad 10.2. I'm not getting a really bad experience. I feel like the people that talk about this "apple walled garden" don't actually know what they're talking about, they're just repeating talking points from others who don't know what they're talking about.

[–]ballzdeap1488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've got a MBP and an iPad, but an Android phone. Basically the only thing I'm missing out on is Apple Pay, but Google/Samsung Pay does the same thing and even more in Samsung's case. My house is all set up through Google Home, which works on iOS.

[–]DoughnoTDMi 9T | DavinciCodeOSX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ecosystem does not require the walled garden in many cases. The garden is something they do anyway. Extra functions wouldn't change how stuff already works together.

[–]Elephant789Pixel 3aXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like a walled prison.

[–]Amolite49Device, Software !! 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pathetic looking and awful software.

It's got a simple and consistent design across everything, including Samsung's apps. Google can't even implement a consistent share menu.

[–]EmpMouallemNote 9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google: Copies Samsung's UI and features consistently through "Pixel feature updates" and system updates

"Google just does it right everytime"

pathetic looking

I sense a bit of bais here. I like google's UI design choices, but material design isn't everyone's cup of tea, and imo the app drawer is less intuitive compared to an app page.

I'm pretty sure Samsung designs their shit to appeal to consumers, not enthusiasts and Android purists

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not really surprising... First people have different sensibilities so no matter what you do some people are going to be unhappy.

But in addition to that Google tends to do useless redesigns just for the career of the PM in charge. And often they're a regression. Not just Android but GMail, Google Drive...

The first presented mockup looks really clean, I'll admit, but the plethora of padding is wasting alot of screen space.

if there was less padding (and I'm p sure there will be), it would look great!

[–]giraffehunter200Pixel 4 XL 31 points32 points  (1 child)

I'm pretty sure (and hope) the big padding is cause the device looks to be set on a 4x4 app grid, which is a relatively new feature of the Pixel launcher. This would explain why there's only 4 quick setting toggles in the notifications too. Let's hope this is the case

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope so too!

[–]erwan 9 points10 points  (1 child)

[–]mec287Google Pixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]audie-tron171LG G7 ThinQ, HTC M8 16 points17 points  (0 children)

RROs have traditionally been APK packages that need to be installed on the device before they can be activated, but Android 12 can now generate non-APK RROs on-the-fly

Very exciting. Sounds like Android could really see a huge boost in theming if it can be customized on device.

[–]simsimdimsim 38 points39 points  (6 children)

Glad they mention the quick settings layout. If we only get four at a time it'll be disastrous.

[–]wazzie19 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That quick settings screenshot looks atrocious.

[–]mrandr01d 4 points5 points  (4 children)

[–]cmVkZGl0LG V60 -1 points0 points  (3 children)

[–]ICEwaveFXOnePlus 5 85 points86 points  (14 children)

I'm sorry, but as someone who works with UI designs on a regular basis, those mockups look like high quality concepts, not actual screenshots.

They don't appear to be very well thought through, there are some issues with the line height and the overall layout seems a bit chaotic. My bet is on them being done by a skilled designer, not by google.

[–]TensukeOnePlus 7T | T-Mobile 54 points55 points  (7 children)

They don't appear to be very well thought through

That doesn't really disqualify them, it's google we're talking about.

[–]hugwalkOrange 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Well, it's Google, you can't really expect anything good from them, they're getting worse.

Why?

MD Guidelines, Android, Google apps uses 3 different black background color.

MD Guidelines, Android 10 Media Player, YouTube app uses 3 different ripple animations.

Most of Google apps don't 100% follow MD guidelines, almost each of them has different design and components This amount of inconsistency can already prove how shitty their design team is.

Android itself already has 3 different shades of black background, so don't say shit like "it's a different branding."

[–]efstajasPixel 5 10 points11 points  (4 children)

The whole point of material 2.0 was to cut back on hard rules and allow for more brand expression through things like allowing fully custom colors and animations.

[–]-Rivox-Pocophone F1 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Yeah, but every Google app still does its own thing, there's very little brand identity. Apple is certainly more consistent

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The sad part is that Google used to have amazing design. Remember how clean, pretty and 100% functional their interfaces were back in late 2010's?

Now they are all inconsistent messes with user hostile "Flat design", more padding and white space than content and incomprehensible icons.

Or maybe I'm just an old geezer who don't like change. I don't know.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Well it's a good nine months away yet. Ample time to develop, change, and refine.

[–]Pew-Pew-Pew-Pixel 7 Pro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]gnimshGalaxy S20 FE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[–]MrSplog 5 points6 points  (5 children)

If they could just put the hamburger menu, you know... somewhere you can reach without using a second hand, that'd be nice.

Especially since their default swipe home buttons breaks swiping in from the left.

[–]UserC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the Samsung Note 4 you used to be able to hold the key used to show open apps, it would open menus

[–]UESPA_SputnikPixel 7 Pro 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Especially since their default swipe home buttons breaks swiping in from the left.

Have you tried swiping in an L motion to open the hamburger menu? That works very well for me.

[–]whatnowwproductionsPixel 7 - Signal 0 points1 point  (2 children)

All you have to do is swipe diagonally AFAIK.

[–]UESPA_SputnikPixel 7 Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time this works too but I found that the L motion works a lot better for me. Swiping diagonally sometimes unintentionally causes the back gesture.

[–]Srikrishnakarthik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is more similar to MiUi or Realme phones UI too.

[–]dancingtortoise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]notdeadyet01Microsoft ZuneFone - Pepsi Max Edition 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Maybe they should fully implement one design before switching to the next. Especially since there will be another refresh within the next few years.

[–]Pew-Pew-Pew-Pixel 7 Pro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll never get over how we got material design with almost zero of the cute animations in the debut MD example video, then a release or two later they finally added tons of tiny refinements like giving every quick settings icon a unique animation, then the very next release completely fucking scrapped anything like that and we're back to static icons everywhere.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So they're basically making the Robinhood app UI the default skin for Android?

[–]pojosamaneo 4 points5 points  (24 children)

[–]BeestMannSamsung Galaxy S10+ 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Lmao the funniest thing is that even the navbar isn't fully adaptive either. I'm actually shocked that YouTube doesn’t have transparency on status bars for Android, considering most Google apps do lol

And the thing is, some apps are actually full-screen so most devs make the conscious choice to make an ugly off-color which sucks lmao it looks terrible and increases chance of burn-in. [–]junktrunk909 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Have people just given in and are using the gesture navigation? I'm not following how Android 12 isn't focused on fixing that mess. On my pixel 3 there was at least an option to go back to 2 button nav but on pixel 5 now it's gesture or 3 button nav only. I use 3 button but it's broken for some apps, just like gesture is broken for other apps. I've been an Android user since the very beginning but this is pretty fundamental and driving me nuts that this took such a giant step backwards. Do you guys use some other launcher or something? If so, isn't everything about this new Android 12 basically irrelevant anyway?
