Had mine for a couple if years...

Had mine for a couple if years...
I've seen mixed reviews.... Over all I've a had great experience with mine.. for the price you get a thick slab of carbon steel with all it's strengths and weaknesses... Of.... *Drum Roll* Carbon steel... You want indestructibility? Pay premium for a super steel.... But also suffer at the sharpening stone. LOL... Like I said I've had mine for several years now.... Yes I've used it to process wood... but just because it's thick and big it doesn't mean it'll please all the survival nuts, you gotta know how to use it.....Never go full gorilla.... Just because it's sturdy it doesnt mean it'll do the job of a maul or axe, I can probably break mine if i wanted too.... Maybe stab the tip into a hard wood and leverage it, or whack it across the grain on a god awfully twisted piece of almond wood or even better batton an oak log full of knots... You'll probably break it..... i guess you get the point... Regardless for the 20 something dollars you get a sheath, a fire steel and a sharpening stone.... and a crusty poop coating... Yet This thing is incredibly easy to sharpen, spine scrapes the firesteel beautifully and the jimping adds grip for delicate tasks... And if you know what you're doing... It processes wood like a champ... and if you prep food it'll take a beautiful rust patina... (After you remove the coating) It isn't a carver but you can definitely feathersticks… If not ask batton bob who brought him into this world from a limb of birch.... UPdATE 2022 baton Bob has passed away, this knife’s spine destroyed him.. beat the crap out of it 2021 using it as a throwing knife, and as the official fire pit/bbq go to for batoning, I can say I’ve split maple, pecan, oak, mesquite, birch, pine, nectarine, and cherry limbs no trouble, the scales are beat, and it rusted being outside in the rain, got micro chips along the edge probably from the throwing, I’ve restored it twice since then, added a convex edge, a couple hits on a strop and it’s shaving sharp, been babying it with mineral oil, still worth it!!! it has reached legendary status among my collection, price to value even with inflation is still undefeated… added a picture of it disassembled after hitting it with a wire brush and sharpening.

I own a more expensive Becker BK2, and have used it pretty roughly while camping and working in the yard and woods. I bought this one to lighten the load because the BK2 is pretty worn. I opened up the package and immediately remembered why I like Schrade knives. They are an excellent value for what you pay. I'm not going to talk about angle of grind, type of steel it's made of. I use my knives hard, then I clean them and sharpen them, and do it again.

The Schrade felt amazing in the hand. Very ergonomic, UNLIKE the BK2 which feels like a sewer pipe with a sharp crowbar on the end. The handle is a hard rubbery substance which feels good to hold, is not slippery when it's wet, but also not aggressive like a pokey G10 grip on a 1911. It's well balanced for rough use as well as more delicate stuff. I was able to baton wood, and then gently grade some shavings off without any problem.

Of all of the "doubles as a crowbar" knives out there I think I like the feel of this one the best. Yet it's slim and comfortable enough where I'd be happy to have it as my only knife in the woods or hunting. I haven't had it as long but as long as it doesn't break, this one will replace my BK2 as my all around hard use knife. For less than half the price, you can't beat it.

My only slight issue is the sheath isn't that great, typical nylon generic sheath. Well enough made, will hold up fine, just doesn't grab me. I'd prefer Kydex with some different mounting options, more like the BK2 sheath.

A selling point of this knife is that you also get a decent ferro rod and a sharpening stone with it, that all fit in the sheath. Not bad for less than $40. The rod and sharpening stone work fine, not outstanding but they get the job done. That's what this knife is all about. It'll get the job done.

Before buying I knew the blade was about a 1/4" wide and was a full tang but I was a little surprised at just how heavy and stout the knife was. I was trying to decide if the weight is a plus or a minus. Obviously a minus for carrying, but the weight really helped with chopping and the width of the blade was great for batoning. As soon as it arrived I had the boys go out back with me and start cutting and chopping away at fallen limbs and logs. We really abused the knife and it took all of the abuse without a problem. It kept its edge very well.

My only complaint so far is with the jimping on the handle. Especially on the bottom where your last three fingers grip. They dug into my fingers too much while chopping. So much so that I took the scales off and ground the ridges flat. Now it feels almost perfect. Now I just need to remove, or grind down, the jimping on the top where your thumb rests. Its a little too aggressive and is uncomfortable to me when using without gloves. With gloves the jimping is fine, even welcome. So if you usually work with gloves the jimping will probably be a good feature.

I did not experience any quality issues with my knife. The blade is straight and the sheath is sewn well.

For a very small amount of money spent I got a very robust and durable knife with the added benefit of a decent sheath with a sharpening stone and ferro rod. A big bang for the buck. If you bought a cheap ferro rod and sharpening stone by themselves you would spend AT LEAST $10-$15. I am very pleased with this knife. So much so that I purchased another to give to my friend for his birthday. He and his boys really liked the knife as well.

I'm a bit of a knife junky... I used to hoard folders for use, but as more and more of my excursions are getting into remote country, I've come to realize I need to carry a fixed blade. As my father used to say about his preference for simplicity inside the cabin of a car or truck... shunning electric windows, automatic transmissions, etc., as "one more thing to break." We can examine the logic or the psychology behind my father and cars, but when it comes to knives, this is a true statement. Folders are more vulnerable than fixed blades. Moving on...

Overall this is a very nice knife -- FOR THE MONEY -- which is a critical caveat. Here are the pros and cons...

The good:
- Bombproof. This is a hardy knife. Thick spine, good steel, durable design (the point doesn't look apt to chip off due to its design).
- Feels good in the hand. Ergonomics are above average. Scales are slightly grippy and textured without being obtrusive. NOTE: YMMV especially if you have large or small hands. I wear a large glove size, but I'd call my hands medium sized and it feels good to me.
- Comes with nice goodies. The ferro rod (with striker) and the diamond sharpener that fit into the sheath are good add ons for a survival knife.
- Has a nice choil that I found a little "much" out of the box, but as I used the knife for fine work, it was really quite nice.
- Good blade length for most camp tasks and survival chores. If you want a heavy "chopper" you'll need to pair it with an axe or machete or a larger knife that doubles as a machete.
- Has a lanyard hole if you want one.
- Totally full tang with detachable scales. Tang, in fact, extends below the scales all the way to the butt of the knife where the lanyard hole appears. This gives me confidence in the knife's rugged toughness.
- 90 degree spine for ferro rod sparks if you lose the striker. I like that.
- Came straight, properly finished, no rough/bad spots. I'm pleased with quality control.

The bad (and the not-so-great)
- The jimping which can be seen in the tang of the knife in the photos is designed to help you get a better purchase on the knife, but I find it a little distracting and slightly uncomfortable. I am not sure if I'll grind it down some or not at this point. I know it has a purpose, but it's the one thing that makes this knife's feel less than "perfect." Note that the grooves you see are not in the rubberized scales, but along the tang of the knife itself. They can dig into your palm a little with time and use.
- This knife is THICK. Almost too thick. The spine is even thicker than I imagined and the knife has a lot of weight as a result. I cite this as a good thing -- it makes the knife rugged -- but the tradeoff is that ultralighters will want to look elsewhere for a knife. This thing is heavy for its size.
- Because of said thickness, the knife has a wedge like shape. This coupled with the wide format of the blade and the coating (more on that in a second) causes a lot of drag when slicing.
- The paint. Uggghhhh! Very coarse, rugged outer coating to protect the carbon steel, but let's face it... it's very, very coarse and it creates a ton of drag and, in short, it doesn't need to be there. I will be stripping mine and blueing it with Perma-Blue to protect it more. I removed a good bit of the paint by smoothing it down with some medium grit sandpaper. I stopped short of hitting the metal, because it does protect the finish, but I will get it down to bare steel over the weekend and treat the blade to give it a patina to combat rust. As a carbon steel knife, it will need to have a light coating of oil if you do this. My premise is it needs oil anyway to protect the cutting edge of the blade where the steel is exposed already.
- The sheath. It's durable cordura nylon with a quick detach system using hook-and-loop fastening material (Velcro-like), but it doesn't portray the hardy message delivered by the knife. I'll probably have a Kydex sheath made for it. This is one of those areas where I am listing it under "not so good" rather than bad. It's a good sheath -- FOR A NYLON SHEATH. But I don't really want a nylon sheath toting my survival knife.
- Out-of-the-box sharpness was OK. It needed touching up to meet my standards, but it took an edge quickly with a whetstone.

The wrapup:
Good knife. Not perfect, but solid and nice. Certainly worth its price point. But if I were advising the manufacturer, I'd recommend a better sheath that reflected the toughness of the knife itself and I'd find a different coating/treatment because that coarse stuff on the blade just slows it down with no real benefit. I'd urge ultra-light hikers and backpackers to look elsewhere and those with a need for a long batoning log splitter might want to go with its big brother (SCHF42). Among the knives in its class (size and purpose), I still prefer the Condor Bushlore (better blade coating, better sheath, thinner spine), but it costs more and comes with less. I wouldn't hesitate to trust this knife in a survival or bushcraft situation, though it might not be my first pick.

Wicked camp knife. I ordered this as I was looking for something as a reliable workhorse knife, it was listed as one of the top 10 Bushcraft knives and the price was right so I went for it. First ,this thing is BEEFY! Holy crap I couldn't believe the weight, it's about 3/16 thick along the spine and with the full tang it will be perfect for batoning logs. The rubber grip feels very secure in my hand but if you don't have big hands it could feel unwieldy. Came with a very nice sheath with snaps and velcro belt attachment. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out it came with a ferro rod and striker AND a sharpening stone. As long as this knife holds a decent edge I have a new life long companion for in the bush.

Reviewed in Canada on May 14, 2019

If you like camping, hiking or developing survival skills, you know that the value of a good blade in the field is worth its weight in gold. Not only is this knife rugged, robust and strong, it's full tang construction is usually found in knives worth 3x as much.

Edge retention is average, so do have something handy to put the bite back on the edge for longer trips. The coating marks easily. But we don't buy a knife to oooo and ahhhh at it. We buy it to use it, and we look for dependability.

This rugged knife is well worth the value, it's a great addition to your pack, survival bag or bushcraft kit. Big enough to baton wood, small enough to make feather sticks. Aside from saying you own brand X or Y, I can't understand why one would pay double or triple this.

Bottom line? It's exceptional value for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Viel (gutes) Messer für wenig Geld!
Reviewed in Germany on June 17, 2019
Product Packaging: Frustration-Free PackagingVerified Purchase
