Research articles are the currency of scientists: they are traded and they are exchanged. They validate what we do and they keep us employed. We agree with O’Connor and Cargill that no single genre of science communication can accommodate all purposes of science communication and that the research article is indeed an essential foundation to other forms of science communication [1].
