So, you’re thinking of signing up for a Skills@Library workshop? Here’s what to expect!

Who are Skills@Library workshops for?

Skills@Library workshops and webinars offer a friendly and welcoming space for you to develop your academic, maths or data literacy skills: from mastering critical reading or expanding your knowledge of statistics, to discovering new strategies for planning your time and checking your work. Workshops are offered to both undergraduate and taught postgraduate (Masters) students from all disciplines. You will have the opportunity to reflect on different approaches and apply what you are learning to your own subject area.

“It was very helpful and informative! Thank you very much for such a fruitful workshop”

What should I expect at a Skills@Library session?

During a workshop you will reflect on your academic work and studies and be introduced to new approaches, strategies and resources that can help you further your work. The workshop leaders often plan group activities where you can share your own experience and insights with other students for them to learn from. In many of the workshops, you also can apply what you have learnt to your own work in the session itself, so feel free to bring your own work along! You are also able to work independently if you prefer, and there will be plenty of time during the session to ask questions.

Most of our in-person workshops are 1.5 hours long and take place in the Teaching Room on Level 1 of the Laidlaw Library. Our interactive Webinars are 1 hour long, and we use the chat feature to share ideas, as well as using the anonymous polls feature. You will not be expected to use your camera or microphone (unless you would like to). Whilst in-person workshops offer more extended activities and opportunities to work on your own writing, webinars involve shorter, more structured activities. You will have access to all resources and handouts in advance of the session.

Who runs the Skills@Library sessions?

Our sessions are led by our Learning Advisors, who are all experienced in supporting students to develop the skills and tools required for university study. We have experts in academic skills, digital skills, mathematics and statistics, who cover a wide range of topics such as ‘Writing Critically’, ‘Managing Your Workload’ and ‘Revision Strategies’. They also provide guidance on various systems such as EndNote and SPSS.

How can I prepare for a workshop or webinar?

There is no pre-session work to complete for our workshops and webinars. However, we would encourage you to think about what you want to get out of the session and reflect on your strengths and areas for improvement relating to the session topic beforehand. Thinking about feedback you have received can help with this. You may want to write down questions that you would like answered during the session.
