My apprenticeship at a car factory in Kirkby changed my life. It gave me all the experience and skills I needed to go on to enjoy a 30-year career in international business. Decades later, it was fantastic to meet some engineering apprentices at Truro and Penwith College last week with Cherilyn Mackrory. With nearly 70% of occupations now accessible via an apprenticeship, whatever you want to do, there is an apprenticeship for you. Working in international business for 30 years, I know just how important the collaboration between education and business is. After all, it's only by giving our young people the knowledge and skills that they need that our businesses can get the high-quality workforce they need to thrive. That's why we've completely transformed our country's skills system - helping people from all across the country to get the education they deserve. Here's some of what we've done 👇 1. We've built a new apprenticeship system from the ground-up. Now, nearly 70% of occupations are accessible via an apprenticeship, and over 5.8 million people have benefitted from this opportunity to learn, upskill or retrain. 2. We've introduced T Levels, Skills Bootcamps and Higher Technical Qualifications to give young people the high-quality technical qualifications they need to succeed in life. 3. We're cracking down on rip-off degrees which are a waste of both individuals' and taxpayers' money - and have removed the arbitrary target we inherited of getting 50% of people into university. 4. We have introduced Local Skills Improvement Plans across every area of England - bringing employers and further education providers together at a local level to address the technical skill gaps. 5. And we've exceeded our promise to deliver 20 Institutes of Technology across England - with our 21st opening this September. IOTs are helping young people access high-quality, higher-level technical education and training across a range of STEM occupations and industries. But all of these brilliant programmes rely on business, education and government working together - and this is exactly what I am focused on delivering. It was fantastic to talk with the British Chambers of Commerce today about how we can continue this journey and nurture the next generation of talent. #Education #Business #Skills #SkillsForLife #Apprenticeships #TLevels #SkillsBootcamps #TechnicalEducation #InstitutesofTechnology #LSIPs
We want to support our brilliant teachers in giving this generation and children of the future the best education possible. That's why, from September, teachers of STEM subjects such as maths, construction and engineering will be able to earn up to £6,000 as part of a new levelling up premium. And, for the first time, we’re expanding this to those working in further education, underlining this government’s commitment to putting technical and academic education on an equal footing. As of this month, eligible working parents of 2-year-olds are now accessing 15 hours of childcare. Over 195,000 more children are benefitting, giving their parents the flexibility to balance work and family life. Find out more on government-funded childcare ⬇️ https://ow.ly/Xbuo50RjBtA

There is a lot of speculation about what the impact of artificial intelligence will be across many sectors, but the reality is, it's already having a huge impact across education and the whole of society. In schools, AI is being used to help both teachers and students. Whether it's helping teachers to mark homework, providing students with extra tutoring support, or reducing teachers' workload by planning lessons, AI is having a really positive impact in our classrooms. Since becoming Education Secretary in October 2022, I’ve been working with education leaders and tech companies to ensure we can harness the opportunities that AI brings whilst protecting against the potential risks. Whether at the #Bett conference in January, at the 'AI hackathon’ we hosted with Faculty and the National Institute of Teaching last November, or just yesterday, at a roundtable hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister, Oliver Dowden, we've heard time and time again that we have a huge opportunity to transform education for the better. This will be best achieved by everyone working together towards this common goal. So let me know what you think below in the comments. How have you used AI so far to improve your productivity? And how do you think we can do better to both unleash its potential and protect against its risks going forward? #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Technology #Education #Schools #Teachers #Business #EduTech
