  • This Black History Month, the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre is launching a call-to-action, asking Black people in Manchester to tell them how they want to see their histories recorded, explored, shared and celebrated. These responses will contribute to a manifesto, to be shared widely and in the hope that it will be used by Manchester’s heritage and culture sector, educators, statutory and voluntary organisations and individuals, and to inform work on Black histories. The survey is open for responses throughout October: If you are not of African or Caribbean heritage, please do not respond to the survey. You can get involved in all the great Black History events and activities taking place this month. Find out more

  • Guess the year? 👀 Our colleagues at the John Rylands have delved into the archives and unearthed some vintage guides for students on using the Library. Did you know where Main Library's entrance used to be? Or that a copy of Shakespeare's First Folio was displayed in the Library until its infamous theft - which remains unsolved! Watch the video in its entirety right now on our YouTube channel

  • The University of Manchester Library is valued locally, nationally, regionally and internationally as a place of great historic importance but also of boundless innovation and creativity. We are an ideas-led workforce, proud of our agility and quality. Our culture is one that translates ideas into impact but that also considers pure exploration and pragmatic application to be equally important. We are looking for an exceptional person to deliver the Library’s vision, Imagine2030 in the new context of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. We are looking to you to contribute to an already rich body of expertise and thought leadership in the Library and to convene specialist knowledge across the University on our changing world. The Associate Director, AIIA portfolio also includes responsibility for developing the Library’s role in ID Manchester, the University of Manchester’s new £1.7billion innovation district on twenty-three acres in the centre of Manchester, one of the world’s most exciting global cities. With other members of Library Executive Team and Library Leadership Team, this role also contributes to our ground-breaking work with leading North American universities on library futures and our ongoing engagement with the Manchester-Melbourne-Toronto Research Alliance. If you would like to take a leading role in coordinating the Library’s regional, national and especially international partnerships in the developing fields of AI and wider transformation then this is a unique opportunity. You will lead the systems and digital development work of one of the world’s most significant libraries in this emerging and fast-paced field but also work with colleagues across the Library and University in all areas of our work as a partner in teaching, learning, research and social responsibility. https://lnkd.in/eDiEnxqB

  • Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day 🌏 What support is available in the Library? 📖📚 We can provide additional support for individual disabled students: *We can provide extensions to high demand books if it takes you longer to read *If you are unable to gather books or journals we can arrange for Library staff to get these for you when you reserve them in advance *Individual inductions can be provided if you need more time to understand the Library's layout and services *If you require an alternative space or access to specialist equipment you can gain entry into one of our accessible rooms. We are also supporters of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme, a globally recognised scheme that makes invisible disabilities visible. Wearing the sunflower lanyard enables individuals to discreetly indicate that they have an invisible disability and may need additional assistance, kindness or a little more time. There are sunflower lanyards available at Library site Customer Services desks for members of our University to pick up 🌻
