I'm at a loss, honestly. My therapist doesn't say it outright (really good guy), but he basically implies that the best way to stay mentally healthy is to "stay unplugged".

Basically he's saying f*ck the world and just live your life day by day, with blinders on.

And I could see how that would work. But is that right? To just ignore how horrible our world is?

[–]tctu 21 points22 points  (2 children)

It doesn't have to be blinders. It can be intentional consumption rather than attempting to drink from the firehouse of each media outlet.

Even if you did live life with blinders on, what difference is it actually going to make to the world vs what it would do for you personally?

[–]noblebun 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Intentional consumption is the answer. You have to break the habit/impulse to constantly "stay current" and only check your media sources on a semi-infrequent basis. It's easy to get hooked on the constant flow of information, but very rarely do you need that specific information the instant it hits. Once a week is more than enough.

Don't let yourself sink too deep, and don't forget to come up for air.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ Exactly this. Don't be obsessed, but don't be ignorant. Don't feed them your attention. Those scumbags don't deserve it.

[–]Grape_fruit_banana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are simply to many events on this earth you have no influence of and in most cases there is nothing but to acccept this.
You have a life to live pls dont forget this.

[–]building1968 2 points3 points  (2 children)

But is that right? To just ignore how horrible our world is?

They tell you in 12 step programs to focus on things that you can change and to try and let things you cannot go.

[–]TeslasMinion369 1 point2 points  (1 child)

sounds like what all the corrupt elite are banking on

[–]building1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not like they are asking for my random opinion or permission. Maybe you are more important than me and they do care about what you think.

[–]FairOlivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think Native People in the Americas gave a shit when Rome fell. Didn't even know it happened.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (3 children)

You’ve missed some great comedy. This guy captured the Ukraine moment perfectly. This guy is fucking legend. Humor is a great way to keep yourself sane in the face of propaganda. Enjoy!

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I subscribe to Ryan Long. :D This is definitely one of the best ways to diffuse the fear, I completely agree.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cassady Campbell is hilarious too. If you watch the whole thing there’s a bonus riff of a Backstreet Boys song. The black guy running the meeting is pretty funny too - he takes his role well.

[–]burrow900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“How many tik tok stars does Yemen have” was the most evil chuckle ive had in a whole

[–]_Midus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey good for you.

This is something I've been long wanting to do.

I'm a bit conflicted though given the recent escalation of times . I want to stay informed for my families sake, but I also want to forget about all the crap too.

And I also wonder if that's how they keep people under control: keep them ignorant distracted with everything else etc.

[–]Dracivonican 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have never let myself get sucked into the news to begin with and it feels like i can look around at life and see more than what my news-watching fellow humans can see.

[–]mildwild6430 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Did you used to be Mormon, too?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a winner.

[–]OrangeBounce 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Good for you man. Just curious… what religion and what game?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was born a Mormon and lived it until I was 22 years old.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.

[–]throwawaypinkstar86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome . I feel I’ll do the same

[–]BobBarker84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking a break or cutting news consumption is the only way to stay sane.

[–]Martin_the_Maker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this.

[–]TheGingerRoot96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken breaks for weeks to months over the last few years.

After awhile you have to think, over the last year did my reading about and seeing news and politics change anything in the grand scheme of things? If I would have not paid attention at all for the last year, would things not be the exact same as they are now? Of course. So what did all that paying attention do but hurt my own peace of mind?

Take a year off. Did you paying attention change anything whatsoever? No. In truth we often stress our own selves out needlessly. Will knowing change anything?

A total break from news, politics, and social media is a huuuuuuuuge stress reliever. It’s not liking paying attention will somehow prevent the nukes from being dropped…..

[–]No_Requirement3731 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discovering the lies made finding the truth easier for me. It's a hard pill to swallow at first, but life makes more sense now.

Just make sure you balance the crap with the good stuff. Keep balanced. Take care...

[–]male-mpc 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Very good! Realizing everything we've been told is a lie, all our beliefs about everything is wrong, is a tricky process (and it seems never ending). Letting go of delusions is freeing.

Yeah focusing on what your passionate about is really good idea.

Could be interesting to evaluate later if coming back to your old ways was a good idea or not.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going back to how I did it before would not work, so I don't intend to. Staying away for too long would have a similar affect of ignorance creeping in. I simply knew which way I was imbalanced and sough to correct it, which I've done with a lot of success. Once I find more equilibrium I'll be able to ebb and flow better.

[–]BananaBrainTendieMan 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What was your childhood religion?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Mormonism.

[–]BananaBrainTendieMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! Very much enjoyed this post. Cheers

[–]MolochHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been doing this for over a year.

Of course I will still see some news on my feed and the radio but I don't actively go out of my way to see whats going on.

You kind of create your own comfortable reality. Is this a selfish way of living? Ignoring all of the hardships in the world and just focusing on your little bubble?

I'm not so sure but it makes me a much happier human being.

[–]unityagainstevil42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It cannot be stated enough just how much of a pull TV has on your mentality.

TV is a mental cancer.

The less TV, the better you will feel.

[–]htok54yk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a million good things happening outside your door

All I see are muzzled masses, vax passes, and constant reminders that I no longer belong in the world.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But just when you thought you were out…the internet pulled you back in!

[–]homervb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sopranos?

[–]mWo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you ruined everything by coming back. Good on you for lack of commitment.

[–]Crafty-Ad-6765 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yet here you are you are back in the trenches

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. And I'll come and go rather than dwelling here.

[–]RWS-skytterEirik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

❤️

[–]FreeGhislaine666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LET'S GO OUTSIDE!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't need the media. There are real people around us. We can speak to each other and form our opinions. I prefer to spend some time discussing with neighbours rather lose time watching the msm.

[–]just_a_alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this sentiment deeply disconnecting is the one thing that can truly detox some shit feeling in your life. The world wide web can be a echo chamber that leads to one to hate their lives

[–]raka_defocus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignorance is bliss. I'm happier not paying attention to things too, but reality doesn't stop when we're not paying attention(slit experiment??) . I like to try and stay a step ahead.

[–]plaztik-love 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm never giving them my fear again.

Great thought!

[–]audiavant86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes jeep it up. your blood pressure will be lower

[–]building1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the same thing before the 2016 elections and my god it was such a relief.

My post made top 10 on r/conspiracy today with a 94% upvote rate. That means it's helping people, which is my goal. Some people in this forum needed to hear what I had to say today. You're not helping. If you don't like it, you can ignore it.

        [–]_GUEZO_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trade precious metals as a hobby so it requires me to be up to date with all news globally so sadly I cannot do this.

        [–]kaoz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to do the same starting tomorrow

        [–]ragnar_graybeard87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. I should save this and actually try it someday

        [–]Zapchatowich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Ignorance is bliss, I suppose?

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ignorance is bliss. out of sight out of mind.
