Everyday English and Slang in Ireland

A 100,000 welcomes

Welcome to the original, deadliest Irish Slang site, filling up - even as you read! - with colourful Irish English, or Hiberno English as the academics call it; copied without credit by gurriers all over the web, but updated here regularly.

While I'm the first to admit that it's by no means complete; fair's fair...it's a start.

C'mere & listen to me. Some people, far cleverer than me, say "Sure some of these words are by no means unique to the Irish". Well, while it's not disputed in my house about where whiskey originated or who invented the submarine, these words are used Everyday in Ireland.

That's the key, good people. What are ya waiting for? Don't be a gobshite. Up the yard!

You are no. cOuNtEr into the parlour.

Bleedin' typical, me counter's banjaxed...again!
And it's not slowin' down the loadin'. It's only 4k.

Sure, it's been going for over 8 years now, with a fair amount of help from some of you lot. Yez know who yez are. Thanks. The rest of yez... don't be emailing me all sorts of nonsense about plays you're working on, books you're reading and all sorts of shite I haven't time for. The bulk of the answers to questions I get asked are answered at good ol' Google after a simple search. :-))

Oh yeah, if you're looking for Irish language help - yep, the same as what some of yez call Gaelic, you won't find it here BUT your first stop should be Irish Dictionary. Yer man has all sorts of pointers from choosing a dictionary to YouTube Irish-style to social networking in Irish. Isn't the internet a grand thing, altogether?

Still need help? Want to know what a word means? Found something in a Frank O'Connor, Roddy Doyle et al book. Check out my fekkin' FAQ or my tips before e-mailing me or visit links to friends who've helped or linked to this site. These links contain some of the most comprehensive Irish resources on the Web.

Drop us an e-mail with comments, additions, and yeah, corrections - but no silly questions!

For the last two years I've been "involved" with the title below. I'm not going to make anything in royalties but you may find it informative and entertaining and sure, it's dirt cheap!
