On April 25, National DNA Day, The National Institutes of Health welcomed a new statue by Mary Ellen Scherl, “The Ladder,” celebrating DNA and children. This statue is also displayed permanently Vanderbilt University, so Kimryn Rathmell feels right at home! National DNA Day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 and the discovery of DNA's double-helical structure in 1953. http://spr.ly/6048jBF4m National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) #DNADay24

NEW AWARDS: Congratulations to three of our researchers for receiving an array of prestigious awards from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)! 👏 ➡ W. Marston Linehan, M.D., Urologic Oncology Branch, received the Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service for his contribution to the discovery of the VHL gene, the gene for the hereditary form of clear cell kidney cancer, von Hippel-Lindau disease, as well as the common form of sporadic, non-familial clear cell kidney cancer. ➡ Andre Nussenzweig, Ph.D., Laboratory of Genome Integrity, received the HHS Career Achievement award for his ground-breaking advances in the understanding of molecular pathways that maintain genome stability. His work has established him as one of the world’s leading authorities and contributors to the study of DNA repair. ➡ Brigitte Widemann, M.D., Pediatric Oncology Branch, received the Secretary’s Award for Meritorious Service for her leadership, support and mentorship of investigators and trainees in the Pediatric Oncology Branch, which has led to the development of the next generation of outstanding physician-scientists and has enabled many additional important discoveries by her colleagues. A growing body of evidence suggests that the consequences of climate change, such as more frequent wildfires, sustained droughts and heat waves, and stronger and more intense tropical storms, may influence many aspects of cancer. These extreme weather events can expose people to cancer-causing substances in the environment, disrupt access to care, and negatively affect the fresh food supply. http://spr.ly/6047bv9n9

Meet Matt Erhardt. Dr. Ehrhardt is passionate about ensuring survivors of childhood and adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancers get the care they need as they enter adulthood and middle age. He and his team are working to uncover factors that are linked to early death in childhood cancer survivors. http://spr.ly/6047bOpEN

MEDIA ADVISORY: An international team of researchers, led by NCI scientists, has identified 50 new areas across the human genome that are associated with the risk of developing kidney cancer. The study includes participants of diverse ancestry and offers insights into the role genetics may play in the development of a rare subtype of the disease. http://spr.ly/6041bvB93

What are environmental carcinogens, and how do they impact cancer risk? Any substance that causes cancer is known as a carcinogen. But simply because a substance has been designated as a carcinogen does not mean that the substance will necessarily cause cancer. http://spr.ly/6040b5uWa #CancerPreventionandEarlyDetectionMonth
