A census of population is normally taken every ten years and is carried out by the Census Office, part of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
The census is undertaken by law and in accordance with an EU Regulation. It is taken as it provides the essential statistical information about the population and households for all parts of the country used by the Government, business and other professional research/consultancy organisations. The 2011 Census The most recent census of population took place on 29 April 2001. Details of the results of the 2001 Census are available on this website. The 2001 Census Family History
Census records are a useful tool for researching family history, and census customer services can provide advice on finding statistical information from previous censuses. However, the Census Office is not able to divulge any personal information relating to individuals - this includes census information requested by individuals relating to themselves. Northern Ireland census forms remain secure and confidential under the terms of the Census (Northern Ireland ) Act 1969.
The Public Records Office for Northern Ireland (PRONI), however, holds microfiche copies of 1901 data.
