Spectator editor says no to media columnist

This article is more than 17 years old

Spectator editor Matthew d'Ancona has ruled out appointing a new media columnist for the magazine.

The post has been vacant since last year, when Stephen Glover resigned after a censorship dispute with then editor, Boris Johnson, then returned briefly only to be sacked by the Spectator chief executive, Andrew Neil.

Mr d'Ancona said his revamp of the magazine, which includes a four-page business section and three-page luxury section called You've Earned It, would not include the return of a media column.

"We won't be appointing one," Mr d'Ancona said. "I do not think the Spectator needs a media columnist. Our pages are precious and I do not think the internal wranglings of our trade are high on the list of Spectator readers' priorities."

Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, owners of the magazine and the Telegraph Group, have long made clear their dislike of media columnists.

Telegraph media commentator Roy Greenslade left the group two months ago after acting editor John Bryant refused to run one of his columns.

Mr d'Ancona's stance seems at odds with the view of Mr Neil, who was known to approve of a media column in the magazine, but wanted an independent writer.

When Glover was the longstanding writer of the Media Studies column, he also wrote a political column for the Daily Mail and rarely mentioned the newspaper in the Spectator.

He resigned from the magazine in March last year after Johnson refused to run an item about job losses at the Daily Telegraph.

Glover returned to the magazine just before Johnson left as editor late last year, much to Mr Neil's annoyance, who sacked him again after just two columns, before Mr d'Ancona arrived as editor.

He now writes a column for the Independent's Monday media section.
