We explore what happened during the the very first Olympiad while reviewing the legendary history of the Games: https://lnkd.in/d7XHDzxD The inaugural Olympic Games took root in Elis (Ilia), in the western Peloponnese, around 776 BC, marking the genesis of a tradition that would endure for over a thousand years. According to tradition, Koroibos of Elis was the winner of the legendary first Olympiad and heralded as the “Olympioníkes”, i.e. the overall winner of the Games. The elebration, staged every four years, transcended mere athletic competition and evolved over time into a monumental ode to athleticism, the Greek ideal of beauty, Panhellenic unity, and divine reverence to the Olympian gods. ✍🏻 Duncan Howitt-Marshall #kathimerini #greece #history #athletics

About us
Kathimerini English Edition is fully dedicated to its mission to provide consistent, detailed and broad coverage to its readers. Everyday on its print and digital editions, the newspaper publishes a meticulously curated mixture of breaking news, articles, analysis, and opinion pieces. Kathimerini seeks to contribute to the global media ecosystem with diverse and multi-faceted reporting – a mission which is reflected in the multitude of sections it includes (Politics, News, World, Culture, Finance, Sports). By systematically separating news in these sections, and dedicating a lot of time and capital in each, Kathimerini seeks to ensure that its readers are informed holistically and can be active citizens in all facets of life. For Kathimerini, it is of the utmost importance not only to carefully curate its sections, but also to distinguish the content it publishes based on what type of article it is. In this context, the newspaper always flags its content – by the use of titles in its print edition, and tags in the digital one – to clarify if it is a news piece, an expert analysis, or an opinion piece. The goal is to be fully transparent with our readers, and enable them to separate objective truths from subjective interpretation. Written by a dedicated editorial team, Kathimerini English Edition provides readers with a comprehensive summary of the main political, business, social and cultural news in Greece.

The number of successful women in prominent roles in the Greek business world is rapidly on the rise: https://lnkd.in/dt2V75uJ There are no longer taboos or barriers in any field. Women no longer require any “help”; they excel independently in politics, in business, and everywhere else. The Union of Greek Shipowners boasts a female president, Melina Travlos, a development of significant importance not only domestically but also globally, given that a quarter of the world’s commercial fleet is controlled by Greek interests. It appears that Greek entrepreneurs and industrialists too, might, for the first time, pick a female president to represent them. ✍🏻 Tom Ellis #kathimerini #greece #genderequality

Kathimerini’s travelogue to Komotini, one of the most diverse places in Greece: https://lnkd.in/dWbikGuh This NE Greek city is a little "Babel" made of Pomaks, Roma, Armenians and descendants of East Thracians, refugees from Asia Minor, Pontians, Sarakatsani and Epirotes. With new students enrolling in the city’s University every year, Komotini is loved by students and locals alike, and not without merit. Full of history, rich in culture and diversity, Komotini has a character like no other city, mainly thanks to the multiple refugee waves during the 20th century that made the city, instead of shrinking it. ✍🏻 Margarita Pournara 📸 Nikos Kokkalias #kathimerini #greece #komotini

The reasons behind the delays Greeks residing abroad face in routine consular services: https://lnkd.in/ddce2Rxv Greek expatriates describe frustrating and time-consuming procedures to complete bureaucratic tasks, as simple as passport renewals or necessary as registry acts. The significant delays in serving expatriates began when the responsibilities of the Special Registry Office of Athens were delegated to consular authorities, a lawyer catering to members of the Greek diaspora explains. “Since the consulates took over, scheduling an appointment can take up to 18 months,” says Christos Papadopoulos, a resident of Melbourne, recounting his struggle to secure an appointment for a registry act last year. ✍🏻 Iliana Magra #kathimerini #greece #greekdiaspora

A greek professor’s plan to save Romeyka, a spoken greek language facing extinction: https://lnkd.in/dEurCf7p Cambridge Professor Ioanna Sitaridou is trying to salvage a language that has no writing system, but is still spoken in the Trabzon region in northern Turkey, mainly by elderly Muslim women. Professor Sitaridou has developed the digital platform “Crowdsourcing Romeyka”, inviting people from all over the world who still speak the language to record themselves. By doing so, Romeyka speakers create a repository of their endangered speech while also giving researchers a valuable resource. ✍🏻 Nikolas Zoi 📸 Prof. Ioanna Sitaridou #kathimerini #greece #linguistics

Discover Chios, an Island untouched by mass tourism that serves as an ideal destination for all seasons: https://lnkd.in/djCt-rtQ Gradually making its way onto more top summer destination lists, Chios is known as the island of mastic, but has plenty to offer: history, architecture and a rich biodiversity, to name a few. Chios is the ideal destination for those who value the North Aegean’s authenticity, especially in the spring, when the Chians are busy preparing rockets for the local Easter celebration. ✍🏻 Aspasia Kakari #kathimerini #greece
