We explore what happened during the the very first Olympiad while reviewing the legendary history of the Games: https://lnkd.in/d7XHDzxD The inaugural Olympic Games took root in Elis (Ilia), in the western Peloponnese, around  776 BC, marking the genesis of a tradition that would endure for over a thousand years. According to tradition, Koroibos of Elis was the winner of the legendary first Olympiad and heralded as the “Olympioníkes”, i.e. the overall winner of the Games. The Union of Greek Shipowners boasts a female president, Melina Travlos, a development of significant importance not only domestically but also globally, given that a quarter of the world’s commercial fleet is controlled by Greek interests. A greek professor’s plan to save Romeyka, a spoken greek language facing extinction: https://lnkd.in/dEurCf7p Cambridge Professor Ioanna Sitaridou is trying to salvage a language that has no writing system, but is still spoken in the Trabzon region in northern Turkey, mainly by elderly Muslim women. Professor Sitaridou has developed the digital platform “Crowdsourcing Romeyka”, inviting people from all over the world who still speak the language to record themselves.
