Vogue magazine to launch Asian edition in Singapore

SINGAPORE, MARCH 15 -- Conde Nast Corp. is planning to launch the first Asian edition of Vogue magazine in Singapore beginning in September, local newspapers reported in Tuesday's editions.

Singapore was selected ahead of Tokyo and Hong Kong because it is 'probably one of the best places in the Asia Pacific to do business in, ' said Nancy Pilcher, Vogue's editor for Australia.

'Besides, Singapore is like a haven of fashion. Every single label in the world is here,' she said.

The well known fashion magazine has already set up an administrative office in Singapore and will bring an editorial staff in next year. Until then, the magazine will be edited and designed by Vogue's Australia office in Sydney.

Vogue Singapore is expected to have an initial circulation of between 15,000 and 18,000. Vogue Australia's circulation is 80,500.

The top women's magazine in Singapore is Her World, with a circulation of about 66,000.

Vogue Singapore's launch follows in the footsteps of Elle, which introduced its Asian edition here in January.

The two magazines are 'an affirmation of international magazines' confidence in Singaporean tastes and Singaporean consumers' buying power,' said Douglas Benjamin, general manager of the fashion retailers F.J. Benjamin.

Vogue Singapore will be priced at $3.70 and will feature mainly Singaporean or other Asian models. It will also carry articles written by Singapore contributors.

Conde Nast also publishes the New Yorker magazine, GQ, Conde Nast Travellers and Vanity Fair.
