Better Sour co-founders Semira Nikou and Isabella “Bella” Hughes’ dream of owning their own business had been 20 years in the making. The lifelong friends, a lawyer and art curator by trade, launched their candy brand, Better Sour, in 2023. With Better Sour, the business partners are celebrating what they call “the journey of sour” with low-sugar, plant-based gummies infused with tart fruit flavors popular in the Middle East and in the Asia Pacific. Bella was kind enough to carve a few minutes out of her busy trade show schedule to share her small business journey with us. Q: Where did you and Semira meet? A: “Semira and I are Iranian Americans from Hawaii who now live in Texas. We met in Honolulu as toddlers at a Nowruz event – which is the Iranian New Year. We are besties, and through the years, we’ve bonded through our shared love of food, travel, and discovery.” Q: Why start your own candy company? A: “We’ve wanted to go into business together since high school. Semira and I share an obsession with sour flavor, which is popular in Iranian cuisine and local food culture in Hawaii. We focused on gummies as the form for celebrating sour fruit flavors because we spotted a glaring gap in the candy aisle -- we discovered that the flavors were not only western centric, but sour tended to be represented in an artificial way.” Q: What sets your candy flavors apart from other brands? A: “Better Sour features global flavors that we grew up enjoying such as pomegranate, apricot, and guava. Our approach to our gummy brand was to celebrate the balanced tartness of fruits by using low sugar and plant-derived ingredients. We know there’s a big appetite for these flavors because we see them at restaurants and on cocktail menus across the United States.” Q: Why sell with Amazon? A: “We’re avid Amazon users ourselves. We know Amazon is an important destination for product discovery and acquiring quality goods from small brands like us who are still growing their national footprint.” Q: Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give yourself as a brand-new entrepreneur? A: “Ha! Don’t let the quest for perfection slow you down. Sometimes it can be tempting to delay initiatives or going to market with a new product until everything is ‘just right.’ As we’ve learned, we’re constantly learning and evolving as a business, and therefore constantly tweaking our product offerings and strategies. We have to just accept that reality and keep moving forward.”
