𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀’ 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀’ 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 On April 25, we were happy to open our doors once again for young high school students on the occasion of Girls’ and Boys’ Day 2024. This German nationwide day of action is a fun and engaging way for girls and boys to have a sneak peek into various professions and industries and get excited about their future careers. After an introduction into biology and altona’s field of work, the students received a guided tour from altona scientist Helge Marquardt through our Research and Development department. They had an insight look into how a lab works, what kind of technology is used and, more specifically, what a diagnostic company does. Also, as a real hands-on experience, they isolated DNA from tomatoes and bananas and set up a PCR with the help of altona technical assistant Uli Eppinger. This way, they acquired an initial understanding of the lab technique PCR. altona is always on the lookout for talented and enthusiastic future team members. That is why we use this opportunity to inspire young people and introduce them to molecular diagnostics. We are looking forward to welcoming interested students again next year. #altonaDiagnostics #girlsandboysday

𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 April 25 is #WorldMalariaDay – time to raise awareness for this serious and often fatal disease that affected 249 million people and caused 608,000 deaths in 2022, according to the World Health Organization. This year WHO’s global public health campaign slogan is: “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world.” There are five different 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 parasite species, the causative agents of Malaria, that infect humans, with 𝘗. 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮 and 𝘗. 𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘹 posing the greatest threat. These parasites are transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿® 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗖𝗥 𝗞𝗶𝘁 𝟭.𝟬 enables the detection of 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘱𝘱. specific DNA, including the five human pathogenic species 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮, 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘹, 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘦, 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘦, and 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘪. Additionally, the 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿® 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 & 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗣𝗖𝗥 𝗞𝗶𝘁 𝟭.𝟬 can be used to differentiate between these 5 Plasmodium species. Most cases occur in Africa, with children under the age of 5 being the most vulnerable group. However, significant numbers of cases and deaths are also reported in regions like South-East Asia, Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific, and the Americas. Malaria can affect anyone: even people from countries where the disease is not prevalent can become infected while traveling or through blood transfusion. Even mild cases of malaria can quickly progress to a severe illness, so early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.   #Malaria #FightMalaria #RealStar #altonaDiagostics

𝗔𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘄: 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿® 𝗡𝗶𝗩 & 𝗛𝗲𝗩 𝗥𝗧-𝗣𝗖𝗥 𝗞𝗶𝘁 𝟭.𝟬 (𝗥𝗨𝗢) altona Diagnostics has recently launched the 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿® 𝗡𝗶𝗩 & 𝗛𝗲𝗩 𝗥𝗧-𝗣𝗖𝗥 𝗞𝗶𝘁 𝟭.𝟬 𝗥𝗨𝗢. It is a reagent system based on real-time PCR technology for the qualitative detection and differentiation of Nipah virus (NiV) and Hendra virus (HeV) specific RNA. The kit complements our Fever, tropical & emerging (FTE) product panel and is for research use only (RUO). 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 The 𝗡𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗵 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘂𝘀 was initially identified during an outbreak in Malaysia in 1998 and has since sparked sporadic outbreaks in South and Southeast Asia, resulting in severe respiratory disease and encephalitis in humans. The virus is thought to be transmitted to humans through contact with infected bats or contaminated fruit. Discovered in Australia in 1994, the 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘂𝘀 causes illnesses in horses and humans. Transmitted to humans through contact with infected horses or their bodily fluids, the Hendra virus can lead to severe respiratory and neurological symptoms. Both viruses have a high mortality rate, ranging from 40-70%, and there are currently no specific treatments available. Nipah and henipaviral diseases are on the World Health Organization R&D Blueprint, requiring ongoing surveillance and research to enhance understanding and control. #altonaDiagnostics #nipah #hendra #Launch #RUO #PCR

𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 World Chagas Disease Day is held on April 14. This awareness day is part of an official global public health campaign marked by the World Health Organization. The theme for 2024 is: “𝗧𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲”. Chagas is a neglected tropical disease and is endemic in approximately 21 countries in the Americas. It is transmitted by kissing bugs and caused by 𝘛𝘳𝘺𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘻𝘪, a protozoan parasite. To help in the fight against Chagas disease, altona Diagnostics offers the 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿® 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗣𝗖𝗥 𝗞𝗶𝘁 𝟭.𝟬, an 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘳𝘰 diagnostic test for detecting 𝘛𝘳𝘺𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘻𝘪 specific DNA. Currently, 6-7 million people worldwide are infected with 𝘛. 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘻𝘪. While the disease is curable if caught early, it can be deadly if left untreated. Testing is crucial as 70-80% of infections are asymptomatic and can be transmitted from mother to child in pregnancy (congenital Chagas disease).
