BURBANK, CALIF. (TND) — A Disney official said during a virtual conference on the company’s “Reimagine Tomorrow” initiative that they will be working with their benefits team to assist employees and their children with obtaining “gender-affirmation procedures.”
Such procedures typically include puberty blockers, breast removal, and genital reassignment surgery, according to Manhattan Institute senior fellow and a contributing editor at City Journal Christopher Rufo, who reported on the comments Thursday.
The other big area is gender identity and expression. So doing all of this work to ensure that our employees and cast can express their gender here authentically and proudly at the company," a Disney official can be heard saying in a clip from the virtual conference. "So, you know, coming up with guides on how to change your photo, information about pronouns, working with our benefits team to give information about gender-affirmation procedures, both for our employees who are transitioning and trans, but also our employees who have kids who are transitioning.
The comments come amid a heated national debate around these and other related issues as state’s seek to prohibit the discussion of sex and gender identity among very young kids and limit access to such “gender-affirming” procedures.
On Thursday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki called the controversial gender procedures “lifesaving” and said the Department of Justice and Health and Human Services has put legislators who seek to limit their availability “on notice,” citing that such actions may violate federal law.
“Across the country Republican elected officials are engaging in a disturbing, cynical trend of attacking vulnerable transgender kids for purely partisan political reasons,” Psaki said, adding that “every major medical association agrees that gender-affirming health care for transgender kids is a best-practice.”
