Medical Assistance in Dying
Canada’s medical assistance in dying (MAID) law seeks to respect personal autonomy for those seeking access to MAID, while at the same time protecting vulnerable people and the equality rights of all Canadians.
On March 17, 2021, changes to the Criminal Code’s provisions on medical assistance in dying (MAID) came into force. The changes responded to the Superior Court of Québec’s September 2019 Truchon decision and were informed by consultations undertaken in January and February 2020 with Canadians, experts, practitioners, stakeholders, Indigenous groups, provinces and territories, and an online questionnaire that received over 300,000 responses.
