An excellent piece from Helen Branswell of STAT on how vaccines fit influenza pandemic preparedness. Hear from our experts: #H5N1 #avianinfluenza #pandemicpreparedness #publichealth #vaccines
Massive amounts of H5N1 vaccine would be needed if there's a bird flu pandemic. Can we make enough?

The fourth(!) season of Superbugs and You is underway! The third episode, "Finding a Second Wind: Cystic Fibrosis," dropped this morning and features extraordinary insights from Ella Balasa, Dr Helen Boucher, and Mary Booth Dwight. I found this quote from Ella Balasa really thought-provoking, especially in terms of how we communicate about antimicrobial resistance (AMR): "I also think that it's so important to ground the problem in a relatable context. A lot of people think, 'Oh, yeah, AMR might affect this person that has CF and uses antibiotics all the time,' or 'Oh, this person that had tuberculosis, that's not something that I'll ever have to deal with,' but really, how common skin infections can be, or within the hospital setting too, getting an infection at a surgical site. It really can happen more often than one thinks, and so I think making AMR more relatable to the everyday average person, making sure that they understand the reality of what it can be...I think that's an area where I see one of the broadest impacts in how we can help to educate the public and help them understand." Huge shoutout to Elise Holmes, Dr Marnie Peterson, PharmD PhD, and Diane Flayhart for the massive amount of work they do to make this podcast series a reality! https://lnkd.in/gYphDNZH

📣 Calling all veterinarians and vet students in the Midwest - check out this brief survey to help us learn more about antibiotic prescribing practices and improve educational opportunities. #animalscience #veterinarymedicine #antibioticstewardship
Are you or do you know a large animal veterinarian or veterinary student in the Midwestern United States? Please take a few moments to help us out by answering a survey on what you might need from continuing education, especially on the topic of antimicrobial prescribing. The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) is interested in hearing from veterinarians or veterinary students who care for large animals/farmed animals in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, or Wisconsin. The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete and will close on April 30. Thank you in advance for spreading the word! https://lnkd.in/g6Dze2WA

On behalf of our SPH community, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Professor Michael Osterholm for receiving the AMA Award for Outstanding Government Service! During the COVID pandemic, his experienced voice calmed the American public during a time of rampant misinformation — a tremendous service to our country. We are so pleased that the American Medical Association recognized his unique contribution. Mike has advanced public health at home and across the world, including founding and leading the renowned Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), and serving on President-elect Joe Biden’s COVID-19 transition advisory board and as science envoy for health security on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. Even with all his achievements, Mike insists that public health is a team sport: “Though the [AMA] award is in my name, we know that the field of public health is based on collaboration and collective effort — so many dedicated professionals work tirelessly to protect the health of our communities.” #UMNProud University of Minnesota School of Public Health https://lnkd.in/dpW5zVay

Huge congratulations to Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) reporter Chris Dall for publishing this in-depth story about the challenges and hope involved in bacterial vaccine development, as well as the extreme need for options to prevent diarrheal and neonatal sepsis deaths caused by resistant bacteria and limited access to last-resort antibiotics in low- and middle-income countries. Plus, we get an inside look at the work of Saint Paul company Syntiron and their efforts to develop a vaccine against E coli and K pneumoniae. Read on for insights from Lisa Herron-Olson, Mateusz Hasso-Agopsowicz, Calman MacLennan, Ramanan Laxminarayan, Padmini Srikantiah, Elizabeth Rogawski McQuade, and Phoebe Williams https://lnkd.in/gUegWfwN

CIDRAP is pioneering a multi-country project to prepare for a possible chronic wasting disease (CWD) spillover from deer or other cervids to humans or non-cervid farm animals. Our workgroup discussions with 67 experts from seven countries will inform an ongoing response plan on topics such as risk communication, education and outreach. https://lnkd.in/gPzBK2_C
