As stated, this is a short story. I was a bit disappointed when I finished it on the second sitting. It was done too soon. J. F. Cooper was a wonderful storyteller. This piece is portrayed as a political satirical commentary on the pre Civil War political climate. To me it seems a pointed morality tale with insights that could inform today's society if it would but listen. I enjoyed it thoroughly and plan on reading it on occasion for insight and inspiration as well as enjoyment.

Living here in NYS Finger Lakes I took a particular interest in the story for reasons of local interest. The book satisfied that interest and more. in fact i called a good friend who has lived on the shores of Cayuga Lake for more than 30 years and he confirmed the existence of The Lake Guns. I understand that Cooper wrote this for the purpose of political satire. That may be so but I found the story of the Lake Guns and the Wandering Jew (Seneca Chief) valuable on their merit as local legend.

A good story if you take it in the form its written in. The notes about how its really a political satire were unnecessary and uninteresting. While it may have been written for that purpose, its better as a legend.

This story is of legend and mystery. I had never read a short story by Cooper and it was most enjoyable. It provides the reader with a lesson in history, myths, and lore. A good read.

Very mildly interesting because of its historical background.
Not in the same league as other J F Cooper writing.
Some works should be allowed to sink into obscurity and stay there.

It was a pretty good short story, with political satire that was lost on me. I thought it was a story about an actual gun. None the less, it was well written although short and more to the point without a lot of embellishment. This particular version has notes added to try and explain the symbolism of the story in the political environment of that day. I tried to ignore those and read it as fiction which made it enjoyable to me.

Little known short story by James F. Cooper. Worth reading by a Cooper fan, but otherwise rather boring. Book was in good shape and an interesting evening read..

Found it boring, and gave up twenty pages in. Fiction has changed a lot since James Fenimore Cooper was an active writer.
