Pros: Unbelievable Speed, High reliability
Cons: Plastic construction, sticks out of computer, requires installation

Summary: I take pictures in RAW format on a professional grade SLR, and prior to owning this device, the task of routinely downloading several dozen images via a USB reader was a tedious chore. Essentially, I would open Lightroom, select the images, and then walk away for about five minutes minimum. Now, I shove this into the side of my Macbook Pro, and the download speeds are about as fast as a hard drive. I pack this now with my gear, and despite the very light, mostly plastic construction, have had no issues even when tossed about the overhead cabin.

This works well for reading CF cards if you are gentle with it - but most folks using the ExpressCard port for Compact flash cards are pro photographers working in a mobile environment - where it will eventually break. If you are going to use this regularly, buy them two at a time so when one breaks you have the spare still in its box or in some protected state.

It worked great and was super fast, then one day it wouldn't work. I used the driver from their website and was sure to burn it to a DVD and save the one that initially worked for me. But then it quit working so I uninstalled the driver, reinstalled, called support and got no help there. I checked the website and its the same version. I bought another of this reader and had the same experience so both got returned (thank you, Amazon!) I went with an off-brand UDMA CF ExpressCard reader and its working way better than this Lexar one and was only $14 (see: CompactFlash CF I/II Reader Adapter for Express Card ExpressCard 34/54 Slot (Support UDMA mode) .) All my CF cards are Lexar, that's all I've ever bought, and I've never ever had a problem so this is pretty disappointing.

I have used Lexar products, including CF cards, for years and have always been happy with them. So I was pretty disappointed in this Express Card CF Reader. This 34-sized reader does work with the 54 EC slot in my Toshiba laptop as indicated BUT the extra space inside the slot creates a loose connection.

My biggest problem was with the length. As other reviewers have mentioned, it does stick out almost a 1/4 inch from the slot. Twice when inserting the reader, the heavy end bent a little where it connects with the longer end. I use my laptop in a very "on the go" way so the idea of being delicate with this reader doesn't work for me; especially if I need to pull and insert this through the day.

It does work and was a fast way to transfer large photos but I did return the reader because of the construction and design - With my rugged ways, I don't think it would last very long.

I instead ordered the EXPRESSCARD/54 Cf Reader Writer by SIIG which sits flush on the laptop's EC slot. I'll review that product soon.

Overall this is a good card reader with a few IMPORTANT OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Lexar does not include with the product (See cons below) and some caveats. Below are the pros and cons from my experience.

PROS:
1. FAST!.....This thing is smoking fast, I timed it ~4:58 to import 5.98 Gb of Raw files from a Sandisk Extreme III card into Lightroom 3.
2. Relatively Cheap. This thing is about a 100 bucks cheaper than a firewire 800 card reader and Thunderbolt accessories are non existent at this point. USB readers can be found cheaper, but they have nowhere near the speed of this reader.

CONS:
1. Requires special steps to operate with Snow Leopard or Lion. I use a 2011 Macbook Pro running Lion and I was encountering multiple kernel panics much like other users have described. The drivers for this device have not been updated since 2010. I emailed Lexar support with my issues. To their credit they replied quickly. Apparently the available drivers do not play well with 64 bit Operating systems such as Snow Leopard or Lion. They recommended rebooting in 32 bit mode. To accomplish this you reboot the machine and hold down the 3 and the 2 keys while it boots. Also they said to make sure you plug the card into the reader before plugging the reader into the computer as this can cause kernel panics. Following these instructions I have had no more kernel panics.
2. Cheaply made. This thing feels flimsy. I would recommend investing in a small hard case of some kind to keep it in.

Again overall I like this card reader. The speed and price make up for the flakiness and cheap build quality. I will say though it is irritating that Lexar has not updated the drivers since January of 2010.

I was a bit hesitant when I bought this because of several negative reviews, but thought I'd take a chance anyway, since there had been a comment about how well it worked with the correct drivers.

I'll admit my experience turned out well because I was forewarned, but the adapter DID come with a sticker that listed the website where you need to go to get the latest drivers. My only complaint is that in the downloadable manual, the instructions tell you to put a card in the adapter, then put the adapter in the machine, and THEN load the driver. The sticker that was on the adapter merely states that the drivers need to be downloaded and installed (which required a reboot of my MacBook Pro), so that is what I did, and it worked like a champ!

I have no qualms at all recommending this, at least on a McBook Pro 17. I did not time the transfers, but it was quicker using this than it is on my Mac Pro using a FireWire CompactFlash adapter.

***UPDATE*** March 7, 2012

Lexar finally updated their driver in February of 2012. So far so good. Seems to be working perfectly (crossing fingers). Check out [...]

I installed the drivers, but I continue to receive a kernel panic almost every time I try to offload a card. Sometimes it works great, but "sometimes" isn't make it very reliable. I work in a professional environment. Speed and reliability are important. I'd rather stick with a slower USB or try out bulkier FW800 card readers. I wish I could return this.
