Earth Month provides an opportunity for us at UCLA Health to shine a spotlight on our environmental strides and the ongoing efforts needed to safeguard our planet for future generations. Here are some highlights for the month of April: 🌱 Tree Planting: Our Sustainability team and HAN Environmental Justice Committee partnered with TreePeople to plant trees, fostering a greener future. 💧 Hydration Station Celebrations: We celebrated our new Elkay hydration stations at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center with fun-filled events promoting refillable water bottles and reducing plastic waste. ♻️ Tobacco Waste Clean-Up: Our EH&S team led clean-up events at both medical centers, addressing trash pollution and promoting a cleaner environment. Thanks to all who joined us! Your support is crucial as we strive to reduce UCLA Health's environmental impact and enhance sustainability for all. Together, we're making a difference! #UCLAHealth #Sustainability #EarthMonth

Last week, the Clothesline Project was on display, helping to give victims a voice and bearing witness to violence against women and children. The powerful exhibit, sponsored by the Rape Treatment Center, displays t-shirts created by survivors of sexual violence on a clothesline. Each red shirt represented a survivor of sexual assault and each blue shirt represented a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted or sexually abused, call the Rape Treatment Center at (424) 259-7208. Services are free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Marking a milestone in its journey, the UCLA Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health celebrates its fifth anniversary. From groundbreaking treatments to transformative patient stories, we honor the legacy of the late Robert Kardashian and celebrate the center’s remarkable achievements in esophageal health since its founding in 2019. Eric Esrailian, MD, MPH, has been a pivotal figure in the center’s evolution and has closely worked with the Kardashian family to honor their father in a meaningful way. Together, he and his team, including Kevin Ghassemi, MD, and Jane Yanagawa, MD, share the collective strides made in improving patient care. “I’m glad that I can contribute to the conversation surrounding esophageal health, even if it’s just to bring awareness,” Kim Kardashian said. “Being a nurse or a doctor is the hardest job in the world, and we respect them all so much, and we’re so grateful to Eric for helping us make this a reality." Here’s to the discoveries to come that will continue to bring better outcomes. For the full story, click here: https://bit.ly/49TiNUD #KardashianCenter #EsophagealHealth #UCLAHealth

Meet some of the volunteers that bring light into our hospitals. From Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center to UCLA West Valley Medical Center, our volunteers create a more uplifting experience for everyone. Among our nearly 3,000 volunteers, several already spent decades working at the university or in the health system and, after retirement, wanted to stay connected. ⭐ Eilish Hathaway spent 35 years in her career at UCLA Health. The week she retired, she walked into the Volunteer Services office. Her decision to volunteer at UCLA Health was “totally, 100% about giving back.” ⭐ Andee Korn worked in IT on campus for 28 years. She staffs the information desk, supports the volunteer office with computer duties, and lends her IT skills to the UCLA Health Auxiliary. ⭐ Jody Gaspar worked for UCLA Health for 16 years. After retirement, she missed the health care environment and sought volunteer opportunities. She lived in Woodland Hills, and started volunteering at UCLA West Valley Medical Center (formerly West Hills Hospital), as it was the closest facility to her home. She started volunteering in 2017 and continues to be committed to her volunteerism today. ⭐ PAC team: When it comes to healing, dogs (and mini therapy horses) may be the best medicine. This furry crew has monthly visit stations: the last Thursday of the month at Ronald Reagan, and the last Tuesday of the month in Santa Monica. Read about former employees who returned as volunteers, and the many ways they help our organization: https://ucla.in/3QiopAV

On Paul’s 56th birthday, his nurse David and his family had a special surprise for the lifelong Sylvester Stallone fan: the real-life Rambo had a message to share with him. Paul had been through months of intensive medical care for end stage heart failure, and his time was near. As he celebrated his last birthday with those closest to him, Paul shed tears of disbelief watching Sylvester on-screen. By talking to his family, Paul’s social worker Codie learned that Rambo was his favorite character to dress up as for Halloween, and promptly tapped UCLA Health’s 3 Wishes Program to help make Paul’s end-of-life experience feel personal and meaningful. The 3 Wishes Program, which started in 2017, has granted nearly 6,000 wishes for 1,700 patients, and will go any length to provide comfort to both patients and families. Most wishes are inexpensive, but they are all priceless to the families that receive them. Thank you to Motion Picture and Television Fund, Dr. Thanh Neville, the UCLA Health team, and of course, Sylvester Stallone for making this wish happen. Read the story: https://ucla.in/3UzohzB
