The illustration was captioned by the author: “A Balloon-prospect from above the clouds or a chromatic view of the country between Chester, Warrington and Rixton-Moss in Lancashire: shewing the whole extent of the aerial voyage; with the meandering track of the balloon thro’ the air.</p>

<p>Thomas Baldwin made a pioneering flight from Chester on 8 September 1785 sketching the landscape as he travelled. The balloon belonged to the Italian aeronaut Vincenzo Lunardi (1759-1806).</p>
