| Introduction | We left Houston in 1983 and headed for the foothills of the Ozarks. Overnight, long lines, noise, pollution and intolerably slow and congested traffic gave way to quiet and solitude. I say this first because I've never lived in a quiet place before. Because of the aforementioned quiet, I can now identify many birds by their calls. Some bugs too. Did you know rabbits squeak and mice sing? At times, the wind blows through the tree branches causing them to rub together in nature's own cello concerto. That summer in 1983, we built our house on a hill, in a clearing wreathed by oak, elm and hickory trees. If you walk out to the field, past the goldenrod and switchgrass, you can see purple hills. On our Peaceable Hill Farm we became stewards of the land - land once given by politicians to the great people of the Choctaw Nation... It seems like a lifetime since that summer. My three children have since left the nest. I've lost family and many beloved pets - had triumphs and tragedies as have we all, as have we all... |
| Interests | My interests are widely varied - I love Zaha Hadid and her architecture and I am interested in science, gamma ray bursts, nature, animals and art. Really, I am very curious and love to read just about everything. I used to read encyclopedias for fun when I was growing up. Also love antiquing. I would also love to travel more someday. I can hardly wait to travel to Istanbul, maybe Cairo. Okay, y'all? |
| Favorite Movies | Parenthood, Harold and Maude, Field of Dreams and foreign films with subtitles.Also Out of Africa, Imitation of Life, The Lady In White, Lawrence of Arabia and Brideshead Revisited and English movies in general. |
| Favorite Music | All but rap and fado. I must emphasize the artists who come to us only once in a lifetime; Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro. Also the incomparable Keith Jarrett. I also like Margie Adams, the Stones, Asleep At The Wheel - I have very eclectic tastes. I recently listened to a guy on NPR named Jens Lekman and I'm still trying to figure him out. My guess is that he must be some kind of performance artist or else I guess I just simply can't figure his music out. |
| Favorite Books | Flowers For Algernon, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harvest Home, works by Katherine Anne Porter, MFK Fisher and now mostly non-fiction. I wrote a novel several years back and had the next four planned out. After years of hard work (you have to go through the process to understand) and 2 different literary agents with temporary exclusivity, yadayadayada, I decided to give up the dream... |
