Review
Now the founder of the Atlanta Study, Dr. Michael Sabom, shares his findings. A leading authority with over twenty years in the field of NDEs, Dr. Sabom reveals their impact on the people who have experienced them. From both medical and personal perspectives, he shares the electrifying stories of men and women from all walks of life and religious persuasions. He explores the clinical effect of the NDE on survival and healing and discloses surprising findings. He questions some common conclusions about NDEs. And he scrutinizes near death experiences in the light of what the Bible has to say about death and dying, the realities of light and darkness, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ -- Publisher

A couple of points, however. First of all nearly NDE experiencers were Christian. That is to be expected in Atlanta Georgia, but I would be very interested to see how an NDE works out for a good Buddhist or Muslim or Hindu. However, as Dr. Sabom lives and practices in Atlanta, he is doing a good job with what he has available for his study.
A second point which in my mind is a bit more serious: He seems to indicate that he wants to take the study out of the world of religious doctrinal wrangling, and to bring it into a more scientific environment. In the first two thirds of the book, he does well with that. But it appears to me that in the last third, he is more trying to cover himself from religious reprisals, picking out verses from the Bible to show that some NDE experiencers (not necessarily his own patients) who reported contact with Jesus, or angels, and whose lives then became much more kind, loving and religious (Christian) than before, actually were having contact with evil spirits. That because what those spirits "told" the experiencers didn't agree with what Dr. Sabom (or his church?) believes is the correct understanding of Biblical texts.
Because of that I didn't really enjoy the last part of the book, and felt it to be focused too much on doctrinal issues, some of which I (a pretty conservative Christian) don't agree with (I realize I'm still learning, however, and my ideas are still developing). However given that, I still found the book to be well worthwhile, and I congratulate Dr. Sabom on a job well done, and a book well written.
Now, to the book:
page 196:
".....Thus, if one cannot return from the dead, what a near death experiencer reports seeing after he returns from his 'journey' cannot be, according to the Bible, an early glimpse of the life that follows death."
Then, what is it? One heavily documented case of a human being having been deliberately rendered "dead" (heart stopped, brain function flatlined) for the sake of risky brain surgery - as referred to above - (pseudonym:Pam Reynolds, see Chris Carter "Science and the Near Death Experience") is herein rendered moot, of no value, because: Lazarus did not report an NDE??? I think Jesus did, don't you?
Today on CNN.com I read a report of brain wave activity in rats whose hearts were stopped. It appears that brain wave activity continues for a notable amount of time and these researches extrapolate this data to mean that all HUMAN NDEs are part of this phenomenon, nothing more than firing neurons. Were the rats resuscitated? Where they questioned regarding their experiences? Did any report meeting relatives (whom they could then identify) who pre-deceased them even so far as before their birth? Oh, gee, I forgot: rats can't "talk", tsk.
So now, let's stop the hearts of humans (starting with those on death row, might as well serve SOME purpose, doesn't the end justify the means??) Let's see their brain waves flatten and then resuscitate them (if we can, and yes there are cases where brain waves were flat and people "came back", even from deep coma where they were in "vegetative state"). Let's see what these death row inmates have to say. Oh but we can't, that would be cruel and inhuman punishment. Okay to do it to rats who can't speak "Human" and then USE THAT DATA to make a statement that the HUMAN NDE IS INVALID, that's ok, right?
Dr. Sabom, guess what? Age five I was dying from double pneumonia (and, many years later because my T waves are irregular, the suggestion by a cardiologist that I most likely had pericarditis, as well.). I had an NDE. I saw the Blessed Mother. She gave me a choice: stay and live out God's purpose in my life (which would be extremely difficult and painful but He would never leave me), or go with her. I don't know if I had the time to make this choice since my biological mother thought I was dying and shook me repeatedly until I opened my eyes. I said to her, "Leave me alone, I want to be with the lady" and I remember it to this day (and I am presently 66). My biological mother and I discussed this when I was well into adulthood (late 40s). To her, it appeared I was dying; she forcibly roused me and prevented me from going back to "sleep". I subsequently recovered.
That "apparition" has been with me for my entire life and, in fact, informed me about something cataclysmic in my life and I've known that from early childhood. As time passed, the "information" I was given slowly revealed itself until I was able to acknowledge, and survive, the death of my only child when she was 23 years old.
So, Dr. Sabom, how does this reality fit into your faith denial, your materialist viewpoint, your dismissal of MILLIONS of NDE reports (of which I've heard many, firsthand, when bringing the Eucharist to the hospital)? And your angels and demons philosophy, the way in which you quote that Jesus "supposedly" passed on information, and then: lo and behold, in your ultimate conclusion, "....The underlying message of the near death experience is consistent with the general revelation of God..." WHAT A COMFORT THAT IS. Talk about double speak!
You're a fraud, a wolf in lamb's clothing, and there are so many hungry souls, people who desperately search for God in the face of personal horrors YOU have NEVER experienced, and you make a lot of money from enticing them to your "truth" as presented in this book written by an actual (HOLY COW) M.D.!!!!
May God forgive you. You most likely don't even believe in a particular judgment. But I am here to guaranty to you that there is one.

Moreover, Dr Sabom convincingly debunks the claim that NDEs are caused by physical, naturalistic processes. His conclusions are entirely logical and compelling.
