Varieties of Anomalous Experience: Examining the Scientific Evidence (Dissociation, Trauma, Memory, and Hypnosis) Second Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

In this revised and updated edition of a classic text, contributors present a wide range of research on anomalous experiences, from commonly documented sensations like synesthesia, lucid dreaming, out-of-body experiences and auditory and visual hallucinations, to rarer and more seemingly inexplicable experiences such as anomalous healing, past-lives, near-death experiences, mystical experiences, and even alien abductions.

The book makes a compelling case for the inclusion of these marginalized and under-recognized experiences as not merely incidental, but essential to our understanding of human psychology.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book brings home the importance of understanding human anomalous experience as a developmental phenomenon that goes beyond a potential form of mental illness. As psychologists, if we truly wish to understand the human experience, we need to explore the causes, effects, and cultural legacies of AEs. The editors of this book have taken the first steps to pull this information together for us using the methods that honor the outer truth of scientific evidence but do not disrespect the inner phenomenological truth of individual anomalous experience. ― PsycCRITIQUES

This is an important book...the editors of and contributors to this volume are to be congratulated on a job well done. ―

Amongst the few good books published on this topic: this one is presently in the top of the list.
Good quality chapters, updated information to acknowledge the researches of the last 13 years (first published in 2000), it surveys with precision and good references the major topics and issues in the area of 'anomalous experiences'.
A great contribution to APA's list of reference publication.

Usefull for clinicians and researchers already at ease with scientific publications and the basics of this field of study.

An excellent read for anyone interested in a recently updated and extremely thorough scientific treatment of parapsychological phenomena, including hallucinations, near-death-experiences and "psychic" powers. As a psychology instructor, I found this book incredibly helpful in fielding the types of questions students often ask about these topics. I cant' wait to integrate some of this content into my lectures!

I had to order this book for a class and unfortunately I was not as happy with the book as I expected to be. After reading the gleaming reviews I expected this book to be a very engaging read; however it just seemed to go on and on over the same topics throughout the book. I understand that this is a APA approved text, but much of the book posed questions, and ended inconclusive in solving the problem (besides that of diagnosing paranormal believers with psychological disorders). I felt like there should have been more studies done on some of the topics in this book.

Este ejemplar muestra el resumen de la investigación realizada sobre la conciencia no ordinaria en los últimos años. Los autores realizan una investigación concienzuda y documentada. Las conclusiones las saca el lector, pero el trabajo es impresionante.

Excellent book that has certainly brought to light another perspective that one cannot avoid seeing quite vividly as a real possibility after reading the persuasive and informative study that Etzel and others have presented. This stimulates the intellect and answers private questions that have been brought to ones mind, whether through philosophical, spiritual, or through psychedelic experimentation and exploration (please see: [...]). It was a real privilege to finally come across a book that articulates these musings and insights in such a clear and fascinating account, which was truly a rewarding reading experience.
