The fact that the subjects span a wide range of characteristics is also intriguing: old, young, religious, not religious, workingmen, ordinary people, etc.
Unexplainable aspects persist: why isn't every experience the same? Why do some of the experiences occur in serious but not necessarily life-threatening situations? Why do some people feel it was they who made the decision to "return" to their body, and others that the decision was made for them by some other entity?
It is a fascinating subject which explores some of the basic questions of life: is there a soul which persists after this life? If so, what happens to it?
"The Truth in the Light" by Peter Fenwick was written in 1995 so this book is over 20 years old. Still it answers some questions. It also asks a lot of questions that skeptics would ask.
Some of the considerations include whether or not consciousness is limited to the brain. The author also asks whether the mind can function separately from the brain. There are some very thoughtful discussions about reality.
As the author says, the near-death experience is a highly subjective experience. Each story in this book is a little different although many experiencers say they went through a tunnel towards the light.
I felt this book had some of the best recollection I've ever read although there is not much about heaven besides talk of gardens.
The author is very good at analyzing the experiences although he doesn't always come to the right conclusions. He doesn't seem to believe in an afterlife although he's been presented with a ton of evidence. He does however seem to indicate that he'd be open to calling near-death experiences a mystical experience.
This book is mostly positive with only one chapter dedicated to negative near-death experiences. There was no typical hell experience or even anything close to biblical descriptions. This may give readers a false sense of security.
Other books I can recommend include:
Imagine Heaven: Near-Death Experiences, God's Promises, and the Exhilarating Future That Awaits You
Done.: What most religions don't tell you about the Bible
The Imagine heaven book gives more details about heaven than are in this book. And the Done book tells you how to get to heaven.
~The Rebecca Review
I have read dozens of NDE books and listened to many testimonies on YouTube. Often they are repetitive and the experiencer's religious beliefs dominate the story. In most they tell of their experience and honestly some of them seem a bit exaggerated as if they have to add some extra sights in order to make a book of it. I often feel sceptical of the elaborate ones! But here is an honest account told in the spirit of enquiry and very believable. The authors explore various possible reasons for the experiences but they never discount that they could actually be real experiences of a life beyond this one.
I am not sure what the authors final conclusions are. They don't try to convince the reader that these experiences are proof of an afterlife. However this reader found enough evidence to convince her that there is! If you read just one book on the topic read this one.

The only reason I gave 4 Stars and not 5 was a personal thing as I was interest in reading accounts of those who had encountered NDE. In saying that the author did the right thing in having a Chapter or two looking into the arguments about NDE been attributed to medical or other natural phenomea as this may well appeal to other readers.
