Records Set by y-cruncher

Rules:

 

Ever since y-cruncher was unlocked in 2010 to allow anybody to set a record, it's become somewhat of a competition to stay atop the board. And because of this, some rules need to be set to keep things fair and to ensure an acceptable level of confidence that the computations are correct.

 

If you wish to set a record, you must:

  1. Run the computation twice using different algorithms.
  2. If using y-cruncher v0.7.5 or later, both computations must be done with "Verify Output" enabled.
  3. If using y-cruncher v0.7.6 or later, digit output must be enabled. You can't claim a record if the digits are never saved!
  4. The digits from both computations need to match.
  5. Then send me the validation files, but do not make any attempt to modify* them. It is recommended to zip or compress the file when sending over email (or any other medium) to protect it from being corrupted by file formatters.

For y-cruncher v0.7.8, turning on disk I/O checksums is not necessary to establish a record. But it is recommended anyway to increase the chances of detecting errors before the end of the computation.

 

*The validation files are protected with a checksum to prevent tampering/cheating. People have tried to cheat before - which is why we can't have nice things.

 

 

Exceptions for Pi:

 

Pi is special since it is the constant and everybody pushes to the extreme limit to compute it. Therefore there is a special method to verify Pi that doesn't require a second computation.

 

Note that for anyone attempting to set a Pi world record: Should the attempt succeed, I kindly ask that you make yourself sufficiently available for external requests to access or download the digits in its entirety (at least until it is broken again by someone else). Pi is popular enough that people do actually want to see the digits.

 

To compute and verify Pi using only one computation, you must:

  1. Run the main computation using the built-in Chudnovsky or Ramanujan formulas. Do not use a custom formula implementation.
  2. You must run the above computation in swap mode. Do not use ram only mode. (you're not likely to have the memory for it anyway)
  3. Hexadecimal digits must be enabled.
  4. Digit output must be enabled. You can't claim a record if the digits are never saved!
  5. "Verify Output" must be enabled.
  6. You must then run the BBP formula to the appropriate hexadecimal offset to match the main computation.
  7. The results of the BBP formula computation must match the last hexadecimal digits in the main computation.

#1 and #2 are needed because only the built-in swap mode implementations have the final verification step to ensure that errors are propagated to the last digits.

#3 is needed because you need the hexadecimal digits to compare with the BBP computation.

The rest are self-explanatory.

 

The BBP formula computation (#6) is very fast compared to the main computation. If you're attempting a Pi world record and you've been in contact with me the whole time, I will probably be doing this step for you on my own hardware as you near the end of your computation. So I will probably have the hexadecimal digits waiting for you at the end of the main computation.

 

This BBP formula method can theoretically be extended to other constants as well. But none of them have the additional verification steps to make this valid.

 

 

Custom Formulas:

 

The rule is that in order to claim a world record, you must do the computation using two computationally independent methods. This (unwritten) rule has existed for many decades and has long preceeded y-cruncher. Exceptions can be made only if there is an alternate method of verification.

 

"Computationally independent" means that any errors (hardware or software) that occur in either computation will (with extreme probability) cause the computations to either fail, or have mismatching digits.

 

For example, the following two methods to compute sqrt(Pi) are dependent:

If there is a bug in the implementation of the square root function, both computations will yield the same (incorrect) results. It doesn't matter if Pi itself is done using different algorithms*.

 

Up until y-cruncher v0.7.6, all the algorithms that it has provided for the same constant are indeed independent. This was intentional so that anybody can pick any two algorithms and run a compute+verify pair - no questions asked. But this changes in y-cruncher v0.7.7 due to the custom formula feature. Now you can enter your own formulas. And thus there is no longer any protection against using two formulas that are computationally dependent.

 

The line between whether a pair of formulas is sufficiently independent is not well-defined. So I will be making a judgement call on these. And I will reject world records done using a pair of formulas if I deem them to be too similar or not computationally independent.

 

The file "Custom Formulas/#README.txt" will tell you all the dependent sets of formulas that cannot be used as a compute+verify pair.

 

*The same argument can be made about y-cruncher's radix conversion since all computations and all formulas will go through the same radix conversion code. The "Output Verify" option enables a series of verification steps for both the radix conversion and the output of digits to disk. This ensures that there is no single point of failure (hardware or software) that can lead to incorrect digits being undetected.

Since there's an unlimited number of things that can be computed, I will only track a small subset of them.
