Chinese New Year in Australia

Even Chinese New Year is not a public holiday in Australia, but it is celebrated in many state capital cities due to the large number of Chinese residents living there. The activities and events are organised by the city councils. Common activities include lion and dragon dance, New Year market and food festivals.

Brisbane

Come and celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year in the Chinatown Mall!  Get involved in the festivities with lion dancers, fire shows, traditional music, cultural performances, Asian market stalls, interactive workshops, roving street performers and a special Chinese New Year Parade.

2017 is the Year of the Rooster, following the Year of the Monkey in 2016. Celebrating the most important day in the Chinese and Asian calendar and attended by hundreds of people each year, the Chinese Lunar New Year festival will offer the chance to discover more about the many Asian cultures in Brisbane and enjoy the cultural diversity of Fortitude Valley.

Description: In 2017, Sydney will be illuminated by giant Lunar Lanterns representing the animal signs of the zodiac as we celebrate the Year of the Rooster.

More than 1 million people will flock to 80 spectacular events in Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival, making it one of the largest Lunar New Year celebrations outside China. Find your zodiac amongst the Lunar Lanterns popping up around the city, enjoy cocktails, music and performance at the Westpac Lunar Lanterns Hub in Martin Place, then join the bustling crowds enjoying the flavours and sights of traditional celebrations in Chinatown.

Adelaide

Description: The Street Party on Moonta Street (Chinatown) and Gouger Street will be filled with stalls, exhibitions, and entertainments from various cultural groups, showcasing Asian cultures and traditions of arts, crafts and foods. This year, we anticipate that over 20,000 people from all walks of life from all over South Australia and beyond will be expected to attend the Street Party.

 

Melbourne

Description: Chinese New Year is the biggest event on Melbourne’s Chinese calendar, bringing with it two weeks of celebration and festivities.

Chinese New Year has a long tradition in Melbourne, and includes fifteen days of cultural festivities, starting with New Year’s Eve and culminating two weeks later with a Lantern Festival.

Feasting, firecrackers and the awakening of the dragon are just some of the traditional festivities in Melbourne’s Chinatown.

Join in and explore Melbourne’s rich Chinese heritage as Chinatown comes alive in stunning hues of red and gold.

Description: ACBC (WA), together with China Chamber of Commerce Australia, Perth Branch (CCCA) would to invite you to join them in celebrating the Year of the Rooster at their Chinese New Year Gala Dinner, held on Thursday 16 February 2017 at the Grand Ballroom, Crown Perth.

This is our flagship event of the year and one of the largest events on the China/Western Australia social calendar. This event typically attracts more than 500+ leading executives involved in Australia and Chinese trade and investment.
