On October 2, 2016, General Congregation 36 convened in Rome. A general congregation is the supreme governing body of the Society of Jesus; GC 36 was convoked by Jesuit Superior General Adolfo Nicolás, SJ, 80, who announced his intention to resign after serving as the Jesuits' leader since 2008.
