It's nothing personal Crewe - well actually it is - because Scott Brown would love it if he can help Port Vale get a result at Gresty Road on Saturday.

The keeper admires and respects the team along the A500, it's just that when he remembers a couple of lows from what's been a very good career so far, the Alex have been involved.

He explains: "I owe Crewe to be honest. We won there 3-2 in the last minute with Wycombe last year but I lost 8-1 there with Cheltenham and they also beat us in the play-off final. So, I definitely have a little thing there.

"It's always in my head when Nick Powell scored at Wembley past me, it wasn't a great moment for me. It was a great goal but a heartbreaking day."

If Brown was a more fragile character we might not ask about the 8-1, at Gresty Road in April 2011.

But the 33 year old's temperament and all-round performances have quickly established him as a favourite at Vale Park since he was recruited on a free from Wycombe in the summer.

So here goes. What about the 8-1 Scott?

"It was a strange one. To be honest, it was a poor team, a lot of the lads knew they were getting released at the end of the season.

"We went 2-0 down early and then at half time it was 4-0...and they got two or three penalties in the game.

"On the way back the manager pulled over and we were thinking 'oh no, we are going to get a rollicking here,' but we looked over and we were outside a pub.

"He took us in and we had two pints. I think it was just a way of saying, 'look just get on with it.'

"But then we were back in on Monday morning and he had us running our backsides off. It was more than deserved. You lose 8-1 and you can't take any credit from it.

"The following year we lost to them in the play-off final. It was great to play at Wembley but losing in the final is never a nice experience so I would love to put another one over them, in the nicest possible way!"

We don't want to tempt fate for the big day but the decision to bring in Brown is looking like an excellent decision by Neil Aspin. The manager had spoken to another experienced keeper but moved quickly when he discovered Brown was out of contract at Wycombe and looking to move closer to his home in Wolverhampton.

Saturday's 2-0 home win over Northampton was one of his quieter games. The Vale would love their custodian to be under-used again this weekend, but know that's unlikely to happen against a Crewe side unbeaten at home.

Brown added: "We know what a massive game it is for the club and the fans. I am sure we will have a fantastic backing there as we do in every away game. We owe the fans a performance for some of the away performances this year, hopefully we can put on a really good display and get three points."

Having lost, and won, at Crewe over the years, Brown has an idea of how the Valiants have to approach the game.

He said: "We know Crewe are a fantastic footballing team and the record they have of producing players. So, we know they are more than capable of putting together some really good football and causing us problems, but hopefully we can cause them problems of our own.

"I am sure we will do some work on them in the next couple of days, look at the video and see a bit more about them.

"Crewe have good set-play delivery, good movement and they are bright in the forward areas. But if we go there and make it an academy-type game then it will suit them more than us because they have players who have all come from academy systems.

"We need to go there and make it a League Two type-game, up and at them, and put pressure on them."
