How do I open and view supplementary material and data?

The easiest way to get to your supplementary files is to find them on the article page. If available, the supplementary material is listed in the following places:

  • Under 'Extras' in the left hand side menu
  • Below the article content in the Appendix section
Supplementary material or data files that come with your purchased article or chapter are available for downloading and viewing up to 48 hours after your purchase.

In some cases the supplementary files might not be available on the article page, for instance if the article is published by another publisher. Clicking the DOI link in the article will take you to the article on the publisher's website.

Below is a list of file types used to display supplementary data. You can either search for a specific file type or browse the alphabetical list below to learn how to open it:

Graphics Interchange Format

.gif - Graphics Interchange File is a commonly accepted format used for image data in web applications. GIF is typically used for application of images at a lower resolution, providing a reasonable quality with good compression schemes that filesize is relatively small. GIF files are directly viewable in all web browsers. GIF also supports animations.

Phylogenetic Trees in Newick (new) format

.nwk files are phylogenetic tree data stored in the Newick format. The Newick format is used by many phylogenetics software packages, e.g., MrBayes, and PHYLIP.

Protein Data Bank file

.pdb (Protein Data Bank) is a textual file format describing three dimensional structures of molecules held in the Protein Data Bank. The complete format specification can be found at this site.

PyMOL Session file
