Abstract

Due to the fairly dismal prognosis often associated with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, chemotherapy as an adjuvant to surgery was a logical development for high-risk patients likely to develop recurrence. It was thought merely necessary to await the availability of compounds that showed reasonable effectiveness against such cancers. Regrettably the wait has been a long one and, to a large extent, still prevails.
