This year, we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of our Open Access (OA) Books Program! Our OA books are more likely than non-OA books to be mentioned in the news, and have on average more than twice as many citations in research and policy documents. This demonstrates that choosing OA is the perfect way for researchers to maximize the reach and impact of their work. We caught up with 12 Taylor & Francis colleagues and asked them to recommend their must-read OA book from our collection. More and more journalists are integrating data into their reporting. But how can they ensure readers actually understand this data? Interactive data visualization could be the key. In their 2023 study published in Data Journalism, Lehigh University’s Haiyan Jia and Penn State University’s S. Shyam Sundar reveal how interactive visualizations can help audiences really engage with the data, improving their grasp of complex patterns and issues. As this approach supports more accurate interpretation of statistics, it may also play a role in tackling misinformation. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dVZSkHpH #DataVisualization #Misinformation

Plagiarism is one of the most common types of publication misconduct and comes in many forms. Yet there is no single global definition for plagiarism, making it confusing for researchers and authors. Join us on April 25th 2024, at 12pm BST, for the webinar: “Ethics focus: plagiarism & text recycling.” This session will include: How we define plagiarism for Taylor & Francis Journals, including what are the most common types; practical tips on how to avoid plagiarism; and we’ll provide clarity on where it is NOT plagiarism and where the gray areas are (for example in text-recycling). What motivates social media users to report fake news, or just ignore it and move on? Media researcher Dr. Shangyuan Wu set out to explore this question. She found that, although community reporting is a key part of many platforms’ strategies for tackling misinformation, audiences aren’t always good at telling what’s misinformation. Even when they do identify fake news, people may be discouraged from taking action for a variety of reasons. Her findings suggest that these systems will only be truly effective when combined with news literacy education which specifically addresses misinformation reporting, and the many hurdles that come with it. We are pleased to announce a new three-year ‘read & publish’ agreement with Rowan University, the fourth fastest-growing public research institution in the United States. Jamie Hutchins, Director of Open Research – Americas at Taylor & Francis, says: “We’re absolutely delighted to work with Rowan University to find a way to offer its researchers a path to publish open access, especially in fields where access to funding for OA is less available. Our goal, always, is to find solutions that help our partners in achieving their strategic goals and to find the right fit for their specific circumstances. Partner success starts as we develop each agreement and continues throughout our relationship to ensure value and impact is achieved.” Read the press release to learn more: http://spr.ly/6042wN4xk #OpenAccess

According to Statista, “Avocados, which have become a meme for the Millennial generation, have exploded in popularity in the United States … In 1985, domestic consumption was a meager 436 million pounds. That number has increased six-fold to over 2.7 billion pounds … in 2022.” In her book 'The Avocado Debate,' Honor Eldridge asks the question: “Have you ever thought about their environmental and social impact?” This Earth Month, we’re shining a spotlight on Eldridge’s book, which has been lauded by everyone from Randy Hayes, Founder of Rainforest Action Network, to BBC Science Focus.
