Protective effect of fosfomycin on gentamicin-induced lipid peroxidation of rat renal tissue
2004, Chemico-Biological InteractionsCitation Excerpt :The mitochondrial transition pool of chelatable iron is essential for these processes [31]. The mitochondrial chelatable iron is considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of cytotoxic conditions and human diseases such as gentamicin-induced toxicity [12] and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases [32,33]. Thus, in the present study, the observed difference of fosfomycin’s effect on the gentamicin-induced lipid peroxidation between mitochondria and microsomes may be related to the characteristic status of chelatable iron in mitochondria.

Protective effect of melatonin in a chronic experimental model of Parkinson's disease
2002, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :No such staining was present in DNA-ase-treated positive controls, indicating that it is specific for the dark degenerating cells. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragmentation after oxidative stress had been previously reported by others [14,22,39] and was found unlabeled by TUNEL [14]. Hayakawa et al. [22], proposed that random double-strand breaks could be formed after free radical attack, followed by rejoining of mtDNA with formation of minicircles.
