Netflix Australia Launches With Far Less Variety Than Netflix US

Netflix is officially here -- or at least about 1/8th of it, if you're used to the US service.

It's been no secret that an increasing number of tech-savvy Australians have been accessing Netflix US via the use of VPN or DNS redirect to fool Netflix's servers into believing that their systems are located in the States for some time now.

In theory, the local launch of Netflix in Australia, which happened today, should tempt those users to switch over to the local service, with local billing and even a quantity of local programming.

Estimates vary as to how many Australians are or were using a redirect method to access Netflix -- the most commonly cited figure is around 200,000, and naturally Netflix aren't talking figures -- but if you're one of them keen to get your hands on the local version, you may want to think again.

Netflix Australia launched overnight with, according to one ad-hoc analysis, around 1,116 available titles all in. Compare that that to the estimated 8,500 titles available on the US service, and it seems likely that the local VPN users may want to hold onto their VPN accounts for the time being unless they're particularly keen on the pool of local content.
