Abstract

Early on June 9, an exceptionally large earthquake occurred 630 km beneath a remote area in the Amazon rain forest of northern Bolivia. (USGS National Earthquake Information Center (NEIQ Quick Epicenter Determination at 13.86°S and longitude 67.54°W).

Minutes later, strong ground motion was felt over much of central South America. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported in initial local news accounts, and damage was relatively minor considering that it was the largest deep event in the seismological record for which accurate estimates are available.
