Matilda is Roald Dahl's most rounded children's book, narratively, and the one that feels best-suited to different interpretations and approaches. The 1996 film was lovely (even with the location switching to America), but the stage musical with songs by Tim Minchin is absolutely wonderful, so it's no wonder they turned that particular version into a film musical.
