Elvis Presley
  • "Before Anyone Did Anything, Elvis Did Everything. While that is technically not true, there is no doubt that Elvis is the most important figure in the ascension of rock 'n' roll as a cultural force. He had it all: the voice, the look, the material (well, some of the time, at least), the hips, the charm, the sneer, the little hiccup in his voice...even in the later, "Fat" Elvis years, that voice was still capable of entrancing anyone who heard it.

They say everyone dies twice. Once when you take your last breath on Earth, and again when the last person speaks your name out loud. By that measure, Elvis Aaron Presley will never die."
  • Biography

The first huge Rock & Roll star, Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, during The Great Depression and moved to Memphis in his teens, signing with Sun Records in 1954. He cut five singles for the label, becoming a hot commodity in the process on the Country charts. After Presley and manager Colonel Tom Parker joined forces, label head Sam Phillips sold Presley's contract to RCA Records in 1955 for $35,000.

In 1956, Elvis had four No. 1 singles for RCA ("Heartbreak Hotel," "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You," "Hound Dog," and "Don't Be Cruel"). Later that same year, he made his acting debut in the film Love Me Tender (1956). He would go on to star in more movies and record more No. 1 singles for two more years before being inducted into the United States Army in 1958.

After returning from his service in 1960, Presley stopped performing live; instead, he used movies to promote his music, and vice versa. The next few years would see Elvis star in multiple films per year, with several soundtrack singles accompanying them. However, by 1964, The Beatles had dethroned Elvis from the top of the rock 'n' roll world.

In the late 1960s, though, Presley started putting out more focused material, and as a result, some of his lost critical acclaim came back. The year 1969 saw "The King" return to live performing, and he would continue to tour during what turned out to be the final years of his life while frequently releasing new music.

Though he was active professionally, Presley's personal life was largely inactive. He became reclusive, rarely leaving his Memphis mansion, Graceland, and becoming addicted to numerous prescription drugs. His marriage to his longtime wife, Priscilla, fell apart. On August 16, 1977, Presley was found dead at his home at the age of 42. The cause of death remains a bit of a mystery, though most believe his drug addiction played a major role. Presley continues to have an enormous and dedicated fanbase, and his name and voice retain their popularity on everything from compilations to merchandise.
