I graduated in 2008 in Arabic Philology with English as a second language and in 2014 I received and European Ph.D. from the Universidad Complutense (UCM) with the highest grade (Sobresaliente cum laude) in the 'Arabic and Andalusi studies' program, with a thesis on the Islamic legal doctrine on usury supervised by Maribel Fierro (CSIC) and Juan Martos (UCM).
Since then, I have contributed to three research projects, two of them funded by Advanced grants of the European Research Council, and one of them by the CSIC. Currently, I am a postdoctoral researcher "Juan de la Cierva-incorporación" at the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean CSIC (ILC).
My international profile is shown in my academic positions and research stays, publications, invitations to conferences, collaborative networks, and service to the profession. As a Ph.D. candidate, I performed two short stays in Harvard (2 months) and Exeter (3 months), and I spent 47 months working as a 'research associate' at the University of Copenhagen (2015-2018). I have contributions in English and Spanish: two books as a single author published by Academia Scientiarum Fennica (University of Helsinki) and the editorial CSIC, and two more forthcoming that will be published by Brill; refereed articles in Journal of Qur'anic Studies, Islamic Africa, Aethiopica: International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies, Annual Review of Islam in Africa and Miscelánea de Estudios Árabes y Hebraicos-sección árabe; several contributions to collective volumes, one of them published by Brepols and two more forthcoming that will be published by De Gruyter and Brill; two contributions in co-authorship to Biblioteca de al-Andalus, apart from a conference report, several book reviews, etc.
I have presented my academic results at international conferences and invited talks in Evanston (IL), Copenhagen, Hamburg, Paris, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Vélez Málaga, Zaragoza, etc. and I have established collaboration networks with scholars from foreign institutions in Louvain, Naples, and Hamburg, etc.
I have been awarded several prizes and scholarships and I have been asked to participate in evaluation committees (article reviews and thesis committees) and the organization of R&D and dissemination activities in Madrid, Copenhagen, and Hamburg.
I am the deputy director of the Journal Hesperia: Culturas del Mediterráneo and a member of the Editorial Committee of the journal Les Chroniques du manuscrit au Yémen. edit

Although Muslims in Ethiopia are a large part of the total population, nevertheless, their literary tradition and their cultural heritage have, until the present, hardly been studied by the academic community. The present article aims to shed light on the Islamic manuscript tradition in Ethiopia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by focus-ing on several codices owned by al-Šayḫ Ḥabīb, a renowned scholar and respected walī from Wällo, in north-eastern Ethiopia.

Starting in the twelfth century, usury became one of the immoral activities attributed to the Jews in Christian anti-Jewish propaganda. Jews became so commonly associated with usury in the Latin-Christian world that the word “Jew” itself became a synonym for “usurer”, mainly in the texts of the Christian exegetes. While this trope spread over space and time, it does not seem to have existed in al-Andalus.
In Islamic texts, while some examples associate ribā (usury) with Jews, it is equally attributed to Christians. Moreover, the practice of usury does not seem to have been used as an argument against the Jews in Muslim polemical literature. This paper focuses on the Andalusi context, showing how the trope of the Jewish usurer did not take root in Muslim Iberia as it did among the Christians of the Peninsula. Of special interest are developments that took place in the Naṣrid kingdom, where several legal opinions (fatāwā) issued between the eighth/fourteenth and the ninth/fifteenth centuries reveal a concern among the population about loans at interest issued by Jews. The Naṣrid jurists, however, appear to have tolerated these interfaith activities.

ʻAbd al-Malik b.

Muslims in Ethiopia constitute a considerable part of the total population, but until few years ago, their literary tradition and cultural heritage have remained understudied. The present article aims to shed light on the field of Islamic literature in Ethiopia in the late Nineteenth and early Tewntieth century through the study of the manuscripts owned by Shaykh Ḥabīb, a renowned scholar and respected walī who lived in Wallo, in northeastern Ethiopia. The presence of Andalusi Sufi poems among the text gathered by this scholar will be analyzed so far.

Arabic letters—as a physical manifestation of the “chosen language” of the qurʾanic revelation—have been employed for the creation of magical amulets in different Muslim communities. Islam is impregnated with esotericism in Ethiopia and the analysis of the magical texts in two collections of Ethiopian Islamic manuscripts reveals a fully Islamic tradition of esoteric beliefs, amulet-making, divination, etc. The use of magic within such a religious context led to the development of rituals in which the written word acts as a physical element harboring supernatural powers and that is the case in protection amulets against evils of different natures, which can be examined in order to learn more about these societies. In this paper I intend to test the validity of the magic-related material found in the corpus as a source of information about local peculiarities and the Ajamization of Islamic esotericism.

In this paper I aim to offer a review on the extant studies dealing with qiraʾāt (Qurʾanic readings) and tafsīr in al-Andalus, and fill the gap of certain aspects of the research on Qurʾanic exegesis. From the last decade, Humanities research is immersed in the use of new technologies and different types of electronic resources have been recently created within the field of Islamic studies. As a result, we have at our disposal new tools that allow us managing a larger amount of data and use different methodologies.
The pilgrimage and studies trip has always been the main connection between al-Andalus and the Islamic East and after it, some Andalusī scholars settled in the East. As it will be shown, this medieval link still has consequences in the current Islamic society, since it propitiated that their works were preserved and, thus, renowned in the contemporary Islamic world. Therefore, not only the most famous tafāsir titles and authors within the Andalusī literary tradition will be examined in this contribution, but also the Andalusī works spread in the East and vice versa.

This contribution constitutes my first approach to the material that has been gathered to date within the research project “Islam in the Horn of Africa: A Comparative Literary Approach” in which I am currently engaged. The analysis of the manuscripts comprising the corpus has put several traces of the Andalusī literary tradition into view. This cultural contact between al-Andalus and the Horn of Africa is not fortuitous, and my aim is to determine how and why these Andalusī authors and works appear in the Muslim manuscripts produced in this region.

Call for papers. MediterráneoS 2020 The fourth edition of the "MediterráneoS" international conference, organized by predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers belonging to the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and the Middle East (ILC, CCHS-CSIC), will take place in October 2020, 14th to 16th. Our Institute brings together very diverse fields related to different languages and cultures of the Mediterranean, considering the Mediterranean as a social, historical and geographical ensemble and attending to its Greco-Roman, Jewish, Arab and Near Eastern (including the Ancient Near East) origins and influences. The objective of "MediterráneoS 2020" is to propose a multidisciplinary space of debate in which young researchers dedicated to the study of the different cultures represented in our Institute present their research works in relation to the transfer of knowledge, either in time and space, and from any perspective and methodology: from the study of educational systems to the transmission of ideas, texts, artistic techniques or work methodologies, utensils, legends, ceremonies, etc. Presentations in which the Mediterranean is outlined as a space of contact and exchange between peoples and cultures will be especially appreciated. We invite young researchers (PhD students or postdocs at the beginning of their scientific training) in any discipline included in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences to participate in these conferences by presenting communications. The talks will have a maximum duration of 20 minutes and may be presented in Spanish, English or French.MediterráneoS has funding for some travel grants for those people who might need it (within a maximum of 100€). Proposals (which can be presented in different formats, such as presentations, workshops, posters, etc.) may be sent until March 30, 2020 (briefly indicating in the subject the subject treated in the proposal) to the following email: jornadas_mediterraneos@cchs.csic.es. They must contain 300-500 words. The proposal must be accompanied by a set of keywords, name and surname, degree, research center or university of origin year in which the doctorate was earned (if it applies) and, in case of applying for the travel grant, reasons for requesting it. Please, attach your CV when sending the proposal. The selected researchers will be duly informed, and then asked to pay a registration fee of 25 euros (which must be deposited in the account of the Santander Bank: IBAN ES88 0049-5134-35-2317224221) indicating the concept "MediterráneoS 2020".

While the word ʿAjamī traditionally refers to texts in many languages written with the modified Arabic script, the meaning has been expanded in the concept of ʿAjamization used in this volume. ʿAjamization is construed in this article, as it is operationalized in the volume, to refer to the various tangible and subtle enrichments of Islam, its culture, and its written and artistic traditions in Africa. 1 In this sense, it is not only the modification (enrichment) of the Arabic script that defines ʿAjamization, but also other features such as the content and the aesthetics of the texts. This paper focuses on the cultural dimension of ʿAjamization in two collections of Ethiopian Islamic texts written in Arabic. 2 These texts encompass magic-related materials, including theurgic texts and invocations to jinn. 3 I will examine these texts to ascertain whether they reflect a local cosmology, even if they are not written in ʿAjamī but in Arabic. 4
