In Histoires hafsides Sébastien Garnier studies the ifrīqiyan historiography of the Restoration (1370-1488). His translation of Ibn al-Šammāʿ’s Adilla (scr. 1457) gives access to the quintessence of the sultanian project.
The book explores the Banū Ḥafṣ’ longevity through the mechanisms for the devolution of power, and the evolutions of the polity. It also analyses the paratextual tools mobilised by the authors, as well as the discourse elaborated to legitimise the court of Tunis along the following tryptic: the Almohad inheritance, the deeds of the sovereigns and the anathematisation of the enemy, the ʿarab.

The Eighth Crusade was launched by Saint Louis against Tunis in Summer 1270. For a few months, the French kingdom and its allies posed a serious threat to the Hafsid regime. Even though they ultimately failed to conquer the capital city, they heavily weakened the rule of al-Mustanṣir (r. 1249–77), emptying his coffers and damaging his prestige. In this paper, we first inventoried the points at stake. Then, we identified the rationale behind the expedition, evaluated the balance of the armed forces, and measured the losses and gains for each side. Second, the sources showed how the authors could depict the situation and assess its aftermath, depending on their political agenda. The Hafsid thurifers tended to minimize the sultan’s impotency, while others (e.g., the Mamluks) sometimes harshly criticized it. Third, the courtiers resorted to poetry and satirized “al-Franṣīṣ” for his setback of the Seventh Crusade (1248–1254) which he had led too. They mocked him in famous epigrams that we translated and analyzed. In conclusion, we examined why they concealed the blow. The Literati of the Restoration (ca 1370–1488) strove to portray al-Mustanṣir as a model king for the First Golden Age (until 1277) in a long series of sovereigns that stretched over more than two centuries.

Pre-Ottoman Libya remains heavily understudied. A manuscript kept at BnF Paris offers a competitive memory to the well-established narrative that can be read in Ibn Ġalbūn’s Tiḏkār (scr. 12th/18th) for example, or that could also be retrieved from previous texts dated to the late Hafsid period. As a local Tripolitanian history, it challenges the standard periodization and the factual truth, calling for a philological approach.
We are currently editing and translating this intriguing text. One aspect of our analysis relies on the inventory of discrepancies, in order to reframe the project of its author(s). We believe that retelling another past against a mainstream version represents a meaningful counterpoint with a specific agenda that we try to reconfigure.

The Woolf Institute together with the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean invite you to their webinar series. While Ibn Khaldun remains the most famous historian from the late medieval Islamic world, this panel will highlight some of the lesser known riches of historical writing from the 14th and 15th centuries. The papers will present case studies of Baybars al-Mansuri (d. 1325) writing in Mamluk Egypt, Ibn al-Khatib (d. 1374) in Nasrid Granada, and Ibn al-Shamma' (d. after 1457) in Hafsid Tunisia. These historians produced works of universal, local, and dynastic history, all building on long and shared legacies of historical writing. The panel explores how common concerns of patronage, political power, legitimacy and memory informed their historical narratives.

In his famous ifrīqiyan travelogue, al-Tiǧānī (fl. 709/1309) retells two anecdotes showing how a ṣāliḥ can act in a context where the exercise of authority has to be redressed. What should be undertaken to face illegal taxation? What should be done when confronting bad behaviour in a mosque? If a ruler violates the Law, the intervention of a pious man can punish him or educate him.
Focusing on these two concrete case studies, we shall reflect on a possible renewal of Fürstenspiegel in the late medieval Maghreb through the lens of sainthood. At the end, we will consider whether the stories involving these holy characters constitute a sub-genre of the Mirrors.

Despite being well-known for the Greek and Roman era, Libya remains rather unknown for the tenth centuries of the Islamic era, that began with the Islamic conquest of the 1st /7th century and ended with the progressive establishment of the Ottoman rule in the 10th/16th century. Thus, this webinar aims at reactivating the academic interest toward this space, that can be conceptualized as a crossroad within the global Islamic world, connecting the Maghrib with the Mashriq, the Mediterranean Sea and Saharan Africa. Following the first conference cycle (2021-2022), in 2022-2023 we will continue to explore the sources available to the historians to write, reshape and reconsider the history of medieval Libya. A special emphasis will be put on new corpuses, especially material documentation.
