Located in the northern Lombardy region, Milan is one of Italy's largest and most metropolitan cities, home to Italy's stock exchange and a hub of world-class culture, dining and architecture. Most famed for fashion, Milan's designer style has been fully assumed by its well-dressed inhabitants and flocks of visitors head to the city for its high-end fashion shops and to get a taste of the class the city is known for.

Milan has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons and a large range in temperatures due its locations inland from the coast. The best word to sum up Milan's weather is 'variety'. Milan is the 4th hottest capital city in Europe whilst also exercising the 6th most days below freezing. It is the second wettest city in Europe, and sees fog or smog on 343 days per year. To say the weather here is changeable is an understatement, so make sure you check the forecast when planning days out.

Europe's fashion capital is humid for much of the year, making winters damp and summers muggy, so keep this in mind when choosing your designer silk outfit. Annually, the city has an average humidity of 75% but it can hit the 80's come summer time. The humidity and high precipitation is why Milan experiences an average of 49 thunderstorms per year! Nonetheless, summer in Milan is pleasantly warm and sunny, a nice escape from colder, less reliable climates. 

Spring Weather in Milan

Spring in Milan is generally mild and pretty wet and conditions are generally changeable, but it is getting nicer as the year progresses. As March arrives, temperatures change rapidly; the winter cold quickly disappears with the average high climbing to 14°C in March and 17°C in April, reaching a balmy 21°C in May. Temperatures do still drop on an evening, with the lowest being 1°C in March which is pretty cold! But come May, night temperatures of 9°C will feel much nicer. Just make sure you pack a coat and check the live weather forecast before planning day trips.

Spring time in Milan does see its fair share of April showers. It rains on almost half of the days in each month and showers are not always light. The heaviest rainfall is in May, when there's 150mm and 14 wet days. However, the spring months are a great time to visit Milan. Warmer and sunnier than the winter months but much milder than the summer months – and consequently less busy – spring is a very pleasant time in the city.

Summer Weather in MIlan

Summer is the best time of year to visit Milan if you're looking for hot, sunny weather. As a result, the season is peak tourist time, so expect to see packed hotels and busy cafés if you're visiting at this time. Book in advance and be aware prices will be at a premium. Summer in Milan sees an average daily temperature of about 21°C, with July and August being the hottest months witnessing average maximums of 29°C. The heat waves and high humidity can make this uncomfortably hot for some travellers and come August, many locals flee the city and head to the coast to escape the muggy heat found in the city. Pack sun-lotion and stay hydrated to avoid any negative effects. June and September see average highs in the mid 20's which might be considered preferable.

Milan does see some summer rain. Rainfall is relatively low in June at 120mm but picks up again by August where there's 190mm of precipitation. Thunderstorms are common and rain generally falls in heavy outbursts which pass quite quickly so don't worry too much if you encounter some. In Milan in summer, sunshine levels peak at 9 hours per day in July and are also very good in June and August.

Autumn Weather in Milan

In autumn, the summer heat retreats and the city is much more comfortable in terms of temperature and humidity. Temperatures reach an average of 13°C with highs of 18°C in October and fall relatively quickly in November, which has an average high of 12°C. Night time temperatures are low across both seasons, dropping to a low of just 1°C in November, so visitors should pack some warm layers.

Despite the lower temperatures, Milan still sees plenty of sunshine throughout autumn with around a 20% chance of a sunny day. However, autumn is the wettest season of the year, so visitors should expect a few showers too. There's 200mm of rainfall in October and 170mm in November, with an average of 22 wet days throughout both months. These are the wettest months of the year, so be warned!

Winter Weather in MIlan

Milan can get very cold and foggy in the height of winter, particularly at night, indicating the extremes of this city's climate. Average daily temperatures stay between 1°C and 4°C from December to February with chilly minimums of -3°C to -4°C. High temperatures only reach 8°C during winter, which means that visitors will need to pack warm layers if they're staying in Milan during this season. Usually coastal areas will remain milder due to the body of water, so Milan's location somewhat explains its weather.

Sunshine levels in Milan drop to two hours per day during winter, but with it, rainfall also lessens. After the wet autumn season, winter is much drier. In fact, February is the driest month of the year, with just 60mm of precipitation and 6 wet days. The city also receives snow on around 7 days per year, which falls during the winter period. There's an 8% chance of a snow day in January.
