Church of S. Maria della Vittoria: medieval-Baroque style mix
  •       >

Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vittoria

General information

The original church was founded in 1394 by the Umiliati monks, however, for the construction of the current church a public area was requested from the Municipality of Milan in 1629 and the building was completed in 1669 with the help of Cardinal Omodei.

There is some uncertainty about the name of the architect who created the design but, according to expert opinion, it could have been Vincenzo Seregni, Fabio Mangoni or Giovan Battista Pissina.

The church is built following a squared layout with rounded off corners upon which rest the four arches which support the hemispheric dome opened in the centre with a lantern. In the lateral arches there are two side altars, the main altar is positioned in the centre arch.

The organ is the work of Angelo Amati.

The facade of 1903 is neglected but the internal baroque embellishment is more ornate and reflects the taste of Cardinal Luigi Omodei, brother of the Mother Superior of the convent.

Don't miss

The decorated interior of the church is inspired by the baroque style. There are obelisks placed in the four corners of the nave while bronze medallions depict the four brothers of Cardinal Luigi Omodei, thus, transforming the church into a family burial ground.

The medallions were crafted in Rome with the help of Bernini’s assistants in the first half of the Seventeenth century.

Anecdotes and curiosities

In the church, used by the Romanian orthodox community (Patriarchate of Bucharest), an iconostasis separates the altar from the main nave.
