Matriarchy

Aproximación a algunos aspectos de la onomástica en el reino de Navarra entre 1570, cuando de acuerdo con las leyes eclesiásticas y también reales se impone la obligación de llevar libros de bautismos, y 1870, año en que la administración liberal implanta el Registro Civil para el estado español. En la Edad Moderna, Navarra vive acontecimientos decisivos desde el punto de vista político y cultural, que van a dejar su huella en la onomástica. Ante todo, en 1512 es conquistada militarmente y en 1515 incorporada a la corona de Castilla, aunque mantiene en lo sucesivo sus instituciones propias, salvo los reyes privativos. En el texto abordamos la compleja situación lingüística de Navarra antes y después de estos hechos, poniendo en relación todo ello con el sistema de transmisión patrimonial. Asistimos a un proceso de castellanización y homogeneización en el modo de usar y transmitir los nombres y apellidos, aunque como se explica persistieron particularidades sobre todo en las aldeas más remotas. Ya fijados los apellidos, se dedica atención a su difusión.

In a collective action to reclaim the label of the Eastern Queendom—a legendary matriarchal kingdom—the villagers in Suopo township, Danba county, Sichuan take advantage of the media and a newly founded tourism association to press their claims by highlighting their political marginality in Danba and condemning the local state for its favoritism and partisanship. In consequence, a struggle over the “ownership” of the queendom has both manifested and generated the reconfiguration of grassroots politics on this part of the Sino-Tibetan border: exacerbated society-state relations, diversified societal and state sectors, and enhanced political participation of both elites and villagers. The locals are simultaneously engaged in an identity politics to define their manifold identities along the lines of Chinese citizenship, inter-ethnic and intra-ethnic sameness and differences, regional/local ties, professional/peasant status, marginality/majority perceptions, and (other) political stances such as loyalty to the party-state.

Films and audiences are like those shy neighbours who see each other frequently in the building,
but never go to the extent of speaking to each other. If one of these neighbours breaks this
wall, the other might find this unusual. Breaking such walls does create atypical experiences.
The term breaking the fourth wall is used in film, theatre, television, and literary works; it refers
to a character directly addressing an audience, or actively acknowledging (through breaking
character or through dialogue) that the characters and action going on is not real. Like public
speaking, fourth wall breaks require considerable thought and preparation.
In films, Fourth wall breaks have not been used expansively. Annie Hall (1977) was one of the
first commercially successful and critically acclaimed exponents of this concept. This film can
be seen as a metaphorical turning point in the cinematic journey of breaking the fourth wall.
Deadpool (2016), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), Fight club (1999) and The Big Short (2015)
are films involving fourth wall breaks, box-office success and critical acclaim. The researchers
studied a total of 83 fourth wall breaking scenes from 10 English language feature films (including
the films above) using narrative analysis. The scenes were analysed with regards to
their audience centric construction. These films have characters: especially the protagonist,
addressing the audience in at least 4 scenes in the film.
This research borrowed some elements from Tom Brown’s book “Breaking the Fourth Wall-
Direct Address in the Cinema”. These are number of fourth wall breaking characters, their
confessions, honesty and effort to build emotional connection. The researchers formulated
some elements to suit the special needs of the research. These are their attempt to retain attention,
effort to entertain, characterization, significance of scene in the film, and placement of
fourth wall break in the scene. The research purpose is deconstructing how this concept has
been used as a storytelling device.
The research was able to quantify the usage of fourth wall breaks and also dissect multiple
layers of their intricacies. Patterns, range and uniqueness emerged among the chosen films.
The research also identified other dimensions for further research of fourth wall breaks.

Archaologische Geschlechterforschung untersucht das Geschlechterrollenverstandnis vergangener Kulturen mittels der Verknupfung materieller Hinterlassenschaften (Befunde, Bilder) mit Sozialgruppen. Dazu kommt die Wissenschaftsgeschichte, die Forschung zu Archaologinnen. Die Akzeptanz im Fach wachst, nicht zuletzt dank der Arbeit von „FemArc – Netzwerk archaologisch arbeitender Frauen e.V.“.

La tesi qui proposta ha come maggiore obiettivo lo svisceramento del controverso dibattito su che cosa si è inteso e che cosa si intende tutt'ora per società matriarcali.
Le idee circa l'esistenza di una società matriarcale e quindi di forme di governo "al femminile", dall'antichità a oggi, sono state in diverso modo esorcizzate, come per esempio attraverso gli immaginari mitici e le leggende come quella delle Amazzoni o delle Lemnie, società di donne dalle caratteristiche mostruose, selvagge e crudeli (Giallongo, 2012). Ancora oggi si verificano atteggiamenti difensivi quando si cerca di avviare delle semplici riflessioni sull'argomento, dovuti anch'essi ad ansie e paure inconsce di un "predominio delle donne", che trova le sue radici nella letteratura e nella narrazione della storia presso le società occidentali, lasciando una porta aperta alle insinuazioni emotive e ideologiche. Mentre i matriarcati sono esistiti ed esistono ancora e, seppur confinati in condizioni periferiche dalle epistemologie dominanti, coinvolgono anche un numero piuttosto alto di popolazione globale.

The ancient Amazons, the equals of men, were among the fiercest opponents faced by the ancient Greek heroes Achilles, Heracles, and Theseus. But were they heroes themselves?  As the objects of Greek male anxiety, the Amazons were understood to be a threat to Greek civilization, in part due to their refusal to be subjected to the chief institution of patriarchy: marriage. In the Progressive era of the early 20th century, authors repurposed the myths in order to unlock their feminist potential. William Moulton Marston, the inventor of Wonder Woman, used the Amazons in his comics to illustrate his theories of female superiority. Women were more loving than men, Marston argued, and would ultimately therefore make better rulers. While Marston’s feminism was sometimes questioned due to his portrayal of themes of bondage and domination in the Wonder Woman comics, it must be viewed within his larger platform. Marston brought a feminist message to the masses through his deployment of the Amazons to illustrate the potential of women ruling the world through loving dominance. Marston’s star Amazon, Wonder Woman, became the symbol that motivated the Women’s Liberation Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, a vehicle for later authors such as Perez to bring forward third wave feminist messaging to the
masses, and, ultimately, became the heroic protagonist of the 2017 film, Wonder Woman. While her revealing costume has been controversial over the years, and Wonder Woman has been subjected to the male gaze, the film, like the comics before them, utilized a female perspective to question the stranglehold that patriarchy has held over the population.

This article surveys literature on history, archaeology, and ethnography, from Lafitau, Morgan, Marx and Engels to Matilda Joslyn Gage and Barbara Mann, Bachofen to Jacquetta Hawkes. It also proposes that patriarchy is a historical development, questions functionalist interpretations of myths (or oral histories) of male takeovers. It looks at the furor over the work of Marija Gimbutas, Eller's charges of "essentialism" and "goddess monotheism," and theories about whether patriarchal social organization originated among foragers or agriculturalists. All the heated rhetoric about "matriarchy" avoids the real issue, which is the existence of cultures that did not enforce a patriarchal double standard or make females legal minors ruled by fathers, brothers, and husbands. Matricultures still exist today in some parts of the world, albeit under threat as all Indigenous cultures are. Whatever terminology we choose to use for them is not the point; it is that they existed and have existed in the past.

Ideas of radical feminism, Goddess Spirituality and Feminist Witchcraft— which originated in the United States during the late 1960s and the 1970s before taking root in Britain—were introduced to British Wiccans during the latter half of the 1970s and throughout the 1980s. Several United Kingdom-based radical feminists who combined their newfound political awareness with Goddess Spirituality acted as important conduits for the transference of these ideas. In the case of the artist and Goddess-feminist Monica Sjöö (1938-2005), I show some of the ways in which radical and spiritual feminist religious ideas did, contrary to a commonly held view, influence the British Pagan scene in the 1960s and 1970s.

This paper undertakes a critical discourse analysis of the notions of matriarchy and patriarchy in a Nigerian literary text and discusses the resulting ideological implications. Matriarchy and patriarchy are gender ideologies that can be generated from the relationship between men and women on one hand, and between women and other women on the other hand. Both ideologies are captured in Lola Shoneyin’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives. The theoretical foundation for this paper is Critical Discourse Analysis
(CDA). The data for the study are relevant excerpts from the text of reference which reflect particular man-woman and woman-woman interactions. The findings include man as alpha as he seeks to dominate woman and resist challenge, and woman as resisting man’s domination and contending with other women who threaten their space and position on the home front. In the text, men’s domination is normalised and thus overlooked, while women’s domination of and contention with other women are unchallenged. Women’s contentions against men, however, are often challenged by society. The paper contributes to understanding of often taken-for-granted ideologies in man-woman interactions, particularly on the home front, and by extension, in society.

Tesi di laurea triennale in Lingue e Civiltà Orientali presso La Sapienza di Roma. Tema: il matriarcato nei culti animisti del Giappone pre-buddhista. Attenzione: potrebbero essere presenti errori di visualizzazione dovuti alla conversione in pdf o ad alcune sviste di battitura che non ho fatto in tempo a correggere prima della pubblicazione.
Il tema del matriarcato o della figura femminile nella yamatologia è sempre presente, ma spesso anche i libri più autorevoli vi dedicano solo pochi paragrafi, con la motivazione che ne sappiamo troppo poco. Il mio intento in questa tesi è stato quello di raccogliere, quanto possibile, testimonianze di studiosi che hanno trattato del tema, unendole ad altre che riportassero la percezione dei giapponesi stessi nei confronti della figura di un arcaico femminile sacro. Durante la ricerca sono emerse numerose somiglianze con i culti matriarcali dei popoli del sud-est asiatico, ed alla fine si è resa possibile anche una comparazione con i popoli della Vecchia Europa ricostruita dalla grande archeologa lituana Marija Gimbutas. L'ipotesi che ho cercato di dimostrare in questa breve ricerca sostiene che sia possibile tracciare un'unica linea di riferimento che unisce i culti di natura animistico-sciamanica di tutto il mondo, dove spesso la componente femminile è centrale. In questa comparazione tra animismo giapponese e culti matriarcali si è reso fondamentale definire il concetto di kami e le sue possibili relazioni con figure delle culture vicine come il khwan dei popoli della Thailandia. Secondo Motoori Norinaga il significato esatto del termine kami è difficile da definire, ma è certo che includa esseri umani come bestie, piante, mari e monti. La mediatrice suprema nel Giappone pre-buddhista, tra il mondo degli spiriti e gli esseri umani era la sciamana Miko, oggi relegata a semplice assistente rituale del prete shinto. La figura della sciamana è però rimasta nei culti del popolo più vicino ai giapponesi tra quelli dell'Asia: i ryūkiani, che considerano ancora tutte le donne incarnazioni divine (kamichu) e conservano una figura di alta sacerdotessa/incarnazione della divinità (nuuru) ed una di medium (yuta). Secondo Massimo Raveri con la patriarcalizzazione della società ad opera della figura mitologica di Susanowo (che storicamente forse rappresenta l'introduzione della cultura cinese) la società matriarcale si separa da quella della comunità, e viene rilegata nel mondo divino dove è una divinità donna, Amaterasu, ad essere la più importante del pantheon. L'equivalente di Amaterasu presso i popoli ryūkyū è Amamikyu, responsabile sia delle nuuru che delle yuta. Data la sua nascita mitologica, "dalla testa" del padre, Matsumura Kazuo paragona Amaterasu ad Atena, che essendo una divinità femminile del pantheon greco sappiamo, grazie alla Gimbutas, quanto fosse influenzata dai culti pre-indoeuropei matriacali. A questo punto se l'animismo, per come lo definiscono Wundt, Freud e Frazer, può essere collegato tanto allo sciamanesimo quanto alla figura del femminile, che essendo come madre-terra, sacra in quanto responsabile della generazione, allora bisogna anche comprendere la percezione di questo animismo. Partendo da Jung ho tracciato un'identità dell'energia spirituale "mana" dei popoli austronesiani, che Lehman definisce "straordinariamente efficace" ed il concetto di "mono", che secondo Oka Masao indica uno spirito vitale che non può abbandonare il corpo che vivifica. In questo si differenzia dal Tama, concetto che oggi è accomunato a quello di Kami ma che secondo Orikuchi Shinobu era originariamente ben distinto da esso. Secondo Ebersole infatti i Kami come gli umani (Hito) possiedono entrambi il Tama. In quanto "essenza" vitale, il Tama può abbandonare il corpo ed impregnare gli oggetti. In questo contesto ho riportato ad esempio il mito della sposa di Takeru di Yamato, morta suicida in mare, che lasciò il proprio pettine "pregno" del proprio Tama. Secondo Codrington il mana è un flusso di energia che "si attacca" e dunque può pregnare anche oggetti. A parte dunque un lieve mutare di significato, a terminologie simili si associano culti molto simili che vanno dal Giappone al sud-est asiatico. Secondo Mikiharu le credenze animistiche di tutti questi popoli, Giappone compreso, erano originariamente le medesime. Iwata Keiji approfondisce meglio il concetto di khwan dei popoli del Laos e della Thailandia ed arriva ad affermare che esso sia una manifestazione benefica di una forza spirituale più generica, il Ṣāsnā phī, che può essere benevolo o malevolo. Finché queste forze abitano le persone o gli oggetti vi è salute, ma con l'abbandonare dello spirito allora si incorre in malattie. In Giappone si crede che anche il riso abbia un suo spirito, la stessa credenza riguarda il khwan del riso presso i popoli del Laos e della Thailandia. L'ipotesi di Iwata Keiji è la seguente uguaglianza tra i concetti nipponici e sud-asiatici:

Mono = Phī
Tama = Khwan

Mentre le associazioni fonologiche ci permettono di ipotizzare che originariamente i concetti di Kami e Khwan fossero più vicini, e lo stesso dicasi per Mono e Mana, ma ovviamente stiamo discutendo solo a livello di ipotesi, ricordandoci però che l'antropologia, in quanto scienza dell'umano, non può pretendere di seguire categorie scientifiche. L'anima non è matematica.
A questo punto la mia ricerca si conclude con un paragone tra la cultura giapponese pre-buddhista e quella dei popoli della Vecchia Europa scoperti da Marija Gimbutas, con particolare riferimento alle rappresentazioni steatopigie delle statuette ritrovate in entrambi i luoghi che seguono i medesimi canoni artistici di "fertilità" e "maternità", ed il culto del serpente, presente in entrambe le culture matriarcali come simbolo dell'infinita potenza vitale, simbolo che segna anche la fine dei culti della terra, documentata in Giappone dalle cronache della regione di Hitachi, che ci parlano della guerra del governo contro i kami-serpentiformi durante la bonifica di Namegata, oppure dello scontro tra Susanowo, che rappresenta le forze caotiche (ara) poi organizzate nel nuovo Giappone ed armonizzate (nigi), con il distruttore dei villaggi (sato) e signore della natura incontaminata (yama), appunto un kami-serpente o dragone: "Yama-ta no Orochi". La stessa sposa di Jinmu, il primo imperatore del Giappone, si narra essere nata dall'unione di una donna e di un kami serpente che assunse le forme di freccia rossa ingravidandola, chiamato Oyamakuhi e venerato poi sul monte Miwa. Tutte queste testimonianze ci parlano di un periodo arcaico ed archetipico in cui il Giappone era terra di spiriti divini e sede di riti sciamanici di stampo animistico e matriarcale.

Nostra Signora Dea & Il Femminicidio degli Eroi è un viaggio nel tempo che illumina la nostra società. Lo racconta un uomo anziano di media cultura, che si sorprende ad ogni passo, e ride, o si arrabbia, come un bambino.

Many scholars have assumed that prehistoric images of women unearthed in China depict goddesses and were used in fertility cults. Close examination of these artifacts raises questions about how their creators understood and used them, and their relation to the development of historic  Chinese culture.

For a century a notion of a prehistoric Mother Goddess has infused some perceptions of ancient Europe, whatever the realities of developing archaeological knowledge. With the reverent respect now being given to Marija Gimbutas, and her special vision of a perfect matriarchy in Old Europe, a daughter-goddess is now being made, bearer of a holy spirit
in our own time, to be set alongside the wise mother of old.

More than a century before many American feminists embraced the idea that prehistoric societies were woman-centered, if not woman-ruled, this theory was an all but universally-accepted history of humanity laid out by prominent anthropologists, especially in Great Britain. Caught in the wave of the emerging doctrine of evolutionism, Victorian anthropologists began in the 1860s and 1870s to examine “primitives” for evidence of their own prehistoric cultural development. Differences among peoples that had previously been placed on a geographic map of cultural diffusion became data used to form a chronological timeline of human cultural development. This article explores some of the variants of the matriarchal thesis set forth by Victorian-era anthropologists, and asks what social factors led to the widespread acceptance of the theory of matriarchal prehistory in late-nineteenth century England and its abandonment beginning at the turn of the twentieth century.

Bei der rituellen Chirurgie soll sich der Jüngling zur Frau verwandeln. Er soll menstruationsbluten wie eine Frau, sein Genital so beschneiden, dass es zum weiblichen Genital wird. Die Eliminierung seines Geschlechts ist die Voraussetzung dafür, dass seine Initiation in mutterfixierten Kulturen als gelungen angesehen wird. Die Bezeichnung der Initiationsriten als Reifeprüfungen sind die aufwendige Selbstdarstellung, um das Gegenteil zu verschleiern: den Zwang zur Infantilisierung. Matriarchale Kulturen sind daran interessiert, die Infantilisierung der Jünglinge zu manifestieren, weil die Mutterfixierung das einzig erlaubte Beziehungsmuster ist, das die psychologische Herrschaft der Frau nicht infrage stellt. Die Jünglinge müssen nach der Beschneidung oder nach der Kopfjagd gefüttert werden. Orale (z.B. erbeuteten Kopf mit Zähnen entfleischen) und sexuelle Exzesse direkt nach den durchgeführten Beschneidungen deuten an, dass das ungestillte Verlangen nach Sozialkontakt der Geschlechter durch konsumistische Muster (Gier) ersetzt wird. Die Vagina dentata (= beißende Vagina), die in Form von Kaurimuschelketten bei Initiationsriten eine zentrale Rolle spielt und eine eindeutige Kastrationsdrohung enthält, wird im Laufe der Kulturgeschichte weltweit zur zentralen Geldwährung. Die Jagd nach Profit steht also offenbar auch in Zusammenhang mit den Initiationsriten und der dort praktizierten Unterwerfung unter die blutungs- und gebärfähige Frau.

A influência da Mitologia e da narrativa dos mitos sob nossa sociedade, nossa cultura e por consequência nossa subjetividade e cotidiano é incontestável. Desta forma, percebemos que os mitos e os arquétipos mitológicos são extremamente atuais e reeditados pela vida contemporânea constantemente. Tendo em vista este universo inconsciente, simbólico e arquetípico, o presente trabalho tem como objeto de estudo o Mito de Vênus e a Mulher Contemporânea, realizando uma revisão teórica acerca destes conceitos. Finalizando em uma análise de como esses Símbolos e Alegorias podem influenciar esta Mulher, buscando enfim a recuperação e ressignificação do Sagrado Feminino por meio deste Mito.

The writings that have emerged from previously colonised countries do not only embody a retaliation to historiographical establishments which have grounded a colonial identity for them such that mobility within these political identifications of marginalisation, barbarism, insurgency, among others, and to move away from them has been a historic venture. The characteristics that are varied in these writings go beyond this and a definitive individualistic fibre contained in them provide the flavours of struggle, magic, folklore, liberation, human nature, which emanate from these narratives.
This paper aims to draw a comparative analysis of three works namely Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel and A Terrible Matriarchy and Don’t Run, My Love by Easterine Kire, produced in two extremes of the globe at different periods of time but share a connection most likely to be present in them than in any other comparison. The stark similarity comes across, in particular, when the aspects of matriarchy and magic realism are concerned. The novels follow a similar trajectory where the situational placements of the protagonists are contained by society, family politics and a matriarchal head. It is interesting to note that both the mother figures in A Terrible Matriarchy and Like Water for Chocolate die in the end and resurface as ghostly figures albeit for a short time. The paper will dwell on the nature of matriarchy in two different cultural contexts basing on the events in the novels.

TOWN OF ÇATALHÖYÜK was a hive of activity, with its residents grinding grain and baking bread, processing the animals felled by hunters, weaving cloth and baskets, chipping and polishing obsidian tools and weapons. Many of these daily chores took place on the roofs of the settlement. The town had no streets, and inhabitants moved about on the roofs, entering their dwellings, which were made of sun-dried mud bricks, reeds and plaster, through hatchwaylike openings down wooden stairways.

Abstract : Various statistical methods are applied to mythological motifs to reconstruct the phylogeny of tales that describe primitive matriarchies. The results show a correlation between spread of myths and spread of genes, and allow to identify the form of this mythology before the out-of-Africa migration. This makes it possible to reject some assumptions about interpretation of rock art.

Résumé : Diverses méthodes statistiques sont appliquées à des motifs mythologiques afin de reconstruire la phylogénie des récits évoquant un matriarcat primitif. Les résultats montrent une corrélation entre diffusion des mythes et diffusion des gènes, et permettent d’identifier la forme adoptée par cette mythologie avant la sortie d’Afrique de l’homme moderne. Ils permettent également de rejeter certaines hypothèses interprétatives portant sur l’art rupestre.

Her works portray the new image of women and her works gives an entirely different perspective and different dimensions towards the upcoming fourth wave of feminism. This paper takes into account of almost all her works and throws light upon the well spread ideas of Feminism and it welcomes the sprouting buds of Mennism or Anti-Feminism and discusses the issues of the male gender in this current matriarchal society and the characteristic features of female chauvinism cited in her works.

Sinuosa serpe acquatica che emerge dalle rocce o bellissima donna dallo sguardo magnetico, la Regina dei Serpenti era con-siderata nei tempi antichi una delle più potenti e benefiche e-manazioni dell’armonia naturale. Da lei dipendeva non solo l’umidità fertile del suolo, ma anche la buona salute, la prospe-rità e la ricchezza degli esseri umani. Tuttavia, con l’arrivo in Europa di popoli dal forte carattere patriarcale e con l’affermarsi, in seguito, della religione cristiana, l’antica divinità serpentina venne dapprima denigrata, e in seguito scacciata, ferita e uccisa, poiché divenuta agli occhi degli uomini la più detestabile rappresentazione del male.
Le storie raccolte in questo breve testo descrivono ciò che ac-cadde – e che tutt’ora accade – alla Terra quando venne privata del potere della Donna Serpente, e suggeriscono al contempo che la guarigione è ancora possibile, e può essere realizzata scegliendo di riconoscere al sacro femminino il suo antico ruolo e richiamando la sua presenza nel mondo.
