This book might be one of the worst books I’ve ever read. I got it because cults are a topic I’m interested in, and the author had been mentioned on a podcast I listen to and enjoy. What the book ended up being was something akin to what I imagine a psychotic break is like. The author herself presents as one of those New Age people who exists solely in a world of “synchronicities” and “cosmic downloads” and has abandoned any semblance of being a somewhat responsible adult to instead go running around the country based on advice and “downloads” from an array of psychics/intuitives to seek out anything that could be a cult. I’m as “into the woo” as anyone, but I still have my feet planted firmly on the earth. That is, I believe that not everything is as it seems but I also am grounded enough in reality to understand that sometimes you have to take a step back and really examine things before plunging headfirst into something based off a gut feeling. Any substance in terms of what the author is trying to “expose” is lost by her constantly vacillating between lamenting over how she’s homeless and broke to how she’s a hero cult reporter breaking all these stories and running cults out of town to being constantly paranoid that the people she’s exposed are sending people or “dark energies” to get her. Nothing she writes about in terms of these cults she’s claiming to expose is anything new, and to be quite honest I don’t see how one could do any sort of decent research or reporting when they’re constantly on the move as this author is. That’s not to say there’s not some truth to what she’s talking about in terms of the cults she mentions; it’s just unfortunate that a lot of it gets lost in her constant lamenting of how hard everything is for her. This book had great potential to be something other than it was, but unfortunately the author’s ego and her delusions of grandeur got in the way.

I've followed Be's work since her Bentinho Massaro exposé, and I've been privileged to get some direct reporting of some of the events she has written about as they were happening, so it's very gratifying to see it all brought together in an amazing tale that reads like an adventure novel. I was initially thrown by Be's interpretations of her experiences in terms of supernatural beings, but she been so mind-blowingly effective in her pursuit and exposure of fraudulent and abusive Yoga and New Age spiritual leadership that I can see it as one of the secrets to her success. There has never really been anyone like her up until now in terms of just how much daylight she has brought to the dark corners of cultic Yoga and New Age spirituality, and now many more can learn what to watch out for in their own spiritual seeking by reading her book.

I knew some general things about cults, but this book has illuminated so much around the distinct patterns of cult groups and given me a lot to consider. Be aware that once you start reading, you aren't going to want to put it down! I'm excited to share this with others in my life who will definitely be interested. I can't wait to see what Be does next!
