We provide best practice employment information that helps employers and employees understand what they can do and how they should do it. It includes Employment Mediation Services and the Employment Relations Authority (ERA), which all play an important role in helping employees and employers resolve employment relationship problems in the workplace. Another part of Employment New Zealand is the Labour Inspectorate which can take enforcement action when minimum employment standards are not met. All employers in New Zealand, no matter their size, are able to use 90-day trial periods, with effect from 23 December 2023. Previously, 90-day trial periods only applied to employers with fewer than 20 employees. Trial periods only apply to new employees and must be agreed to by the employer and employee as part of a written employment agreement before the employee starts working for the employer. People who test positive for COVID-19 are recommended to isolate for five days and stay home until they have recovered. Employees are encouraged to tell their employers if they test positive for COVID-19 and are isolating as a result. Employees can take sick leave to stay home while isolating.
