  • "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." – Benjamin Franklin Preparation is the cornerstone of effective response, especially in youth sports safety. As the heartbeat of our communities, youth sports organizations, park and recreation associations, and schools play a vital role in fostering health, wellness, and safety among youth. However, amidst the joy and camaraderie of sports activities, there's a silent danger that lurks - sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA is a leading cause of death in the United States, and it can strike anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. That's why organizations must be prepared with the necessary tools to respond swiftly in an emergency. Collaborating with GoRescue and ZOLL Medical Corporation®, the National Council of Youth Sports (NCYS) proudly presents the #HeartGuardHeroes Challenge. This pioneering initiative aims to elevate awareness about the significance of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in communities and furnish deserving organizations with life-saving AEDs to fortify their safety measures. The HeartGuard Heroes Challenge extends an invitation to all youth sports organizations, park and recreation associations, and schools across the United States. Participating entities are urged to share their compelling narratives with NCYS, articulating why their organization merits an AED. Entries will undergo evaluation based on criteria encompassing storytelling excellence, community impact, and social media engagement, with additional commendation reserved for integrating influencers. The 13 organizations accruing the highest total points will each receive a ZOLL AED 3® to fortify their life-saving capabilities. Get started with your entry here - http://qr.zoll.com/ncys. For questions regarding the #HeartGuard Heroes Challenge, contact Wayne B. Moss at wayne@ncys.org. Let us unite in our quest to make a difference.

It warms my heart to bring you some incredibly uplifting news on this beautiful Friday! ❤️ I'm truly inspired to share an incredible story of resilience and life-saving action. Omar Clunis, a teenage soccer player in Goose Creek, South Carolina, life took an unexpected turn during a recent soccer game. Omar was celebrating, high-fiving his teammates, and capturing memories with photos after a game. It was a moment of joy but quickly became a life-threatening emergency. Athletic trainer Ashley Chrestman, who had been watching the game, received an urgent call on her two-way radio. The uneasiness in the caller's voice was palpable, signaling that something was seriously wrong. Ashley rushed to the scene to find Omar lying on the ground, gasping for air and seemingly experiencing a seizure. While it was initially suspected to be an asthma attack, Ashley, part of the Medical University of South Carolina Health Sports Medicine team, quickly recognized that it was a heart-related issue. She initiated CPR and utilized an automated external defibrillator (AED). Omar's heart had stopped, and Ashley's quick response kept him alive long enough for Berkeley County emergency medical technicians to take over and provide further care. This incident highlights the importance of preparedness and immediate action when dealing with sudden cardiac arrest, a condition that claims the lives of thousands each year. Omar's recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. Did you know that Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., affecting more than 350,000 people each year? Shockingly, the survival rate outside a medical facility is less than 10%, according to the American Heart Association. However, with the immediate use of an AED, survival rates can soar to as high as 70%. As we celebrate Omar's recovery and indomitable spirit, let's also remember that each of us holds the power to make a difference in our communities. In light of this, I urge you to take action today to keep our youth athletes safe. 🚨 Direct Call to Action: 🚨 Today marks the closing day for NCYS's grant application for ZOLL Medical Corporation AEDs, made possible through our valued partner, GoRescue. These devices can be a lifeline in emergencies like the one Omar faced. By applying for this grant, you can contribute directly to safety and save lives. https://lnkd.in/guMVHyPF Omar's journey is a testament to the incredible impact of quick thinking, preparedness, and access to the right resources. Let's prioritize safety in our communities and seize this opportunity to make a tangible difference. Together, we can ensure that more stories like Omar's have a happy ending. NCYS is extending heartfelt wishes to Omar for a bright and healthy future filled with new opportunities and cherished moments. 🙌 #SuddenCardiacArrest #YouthSportsSafety #YouthSports

  • #SafeSportDay is a perfect opportunity for parents to talk with their children about injury prevention and what to do if an injury does occur, or if an injury leads to surgery. Unfortunately, 3 out of 10 teens who receive opioid prescriptions before their high school graduation are more likely to misuse opioids in the future. In partnership with Pacira BioSciences, Inc., we’re raising awareness for non-opioid pain management options that can provide pain relief after surgery. Check out our Q&A with an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and his approach to youth pain management: https://lnkd.in/gpN7X7ns #youthsports #safetyculture
