SCCN is conducting a whole gamut of cutting-edge studies on developing circuits and behavior in the primate brain. This includes but is not limited to, molecular, cellular, behavioral, and physiological approaches to understanding how the complex and highly reproducible architecture of the brain emerges, in addition to how minor perturbations during specific epochs of brain development can lead to significant manifestations in adulthood, including neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders. The position is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens. Applicants must submit a current curriculum vitae, a one-page statement of research interest, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. James A. Bourne via e-mail at james.bourne@nih.gov. Sensory hypersensitivity is a symptom often associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as more than 90% of children who have ASD experience this sensory challenge. Researchers examining the neural underpinnings of sensory hypersensitivity have often focused on the role of the forebrain—an area in the front of the brain involved in processing sensory stimuli and regulating behaviors and emotions. However, new research suggests that brain circuitry that supports sensory reflexes—which occur at a much earlier stage of sensory processing—could also be contributing to this sensitivity. In a proof-of-concept study, researchers demonstrated the effectiveness of a potential new therapy for Timothy syndrome, an often life-threatening and rare genetic disorder that affects a wide range of bodily systems, leading to severe cardiac, neurological, and psychiatric symptoms as well as physical differences such as webbed fingers and toes. Not only do these findings offer a potential road map to treat Timothy syndrome, but research into this condition also offers broader insights into other rare genetic conditions and mental disorders. https://go.nih.gov/yJpzIOo
