There are several small islands off the north and east coasts of Borneo, in the east Malaysian state of Sabah and the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Timur (see map, p. 484), which together constitute a Secondary Area defined by the distribution of Grey Imperial-pigeon Ducula pickeringii, a threatened small-island specialist (classified as Vulnerable) which also ranges northwards to the Philippines (EBAs 155, 156) and eastwards to Miangas and Talaud (EBA 167). This species is found in forest on small islands, and is threatened by habitat loss and hunting (Toone et al. 1993, D. R. Wells in litt. 1994). Another restricted-range small-island specialist, Mantanani Scops-owl Otus mantananensis, is common in forest and coconut plantations on the island of Mantanani (MacKinnon and Phillipps 1993) in this Secondary Area, and also ranges northwards to the Philippines (EBAs 155 and 156 and Secondary Area s095).
