Retro Lincoln City FC

DAVE PHILLIPS
Dave Phillips - formerly of Lincoln City FCBorn: 29th July 1963 in Wegburg, Germany.

Position: left-midfield.

Lincoln City career: 16+(3) appearances between March 1999 - May 2000.

International career: 62 appearances for Wales.

Clubs: Plymouth, Man City, Coventry, Norwich, Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield, Lincoln City and Stevenage Borough.

Dave Phillips was an experienced midfielder who joined the Imps in March 1999 on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town, after enjoying a career played mainly in the top division. He played 62 times for Wales and won a F.A. Cup winners' medal with Coventry City in 1987.

His professional career began at Plymouth Argyle in 1981. He found fame at Manchester City before joining Coventry. He later became a vital first team player for both Norwich City and Notingham Forest.

Unfortunately, Phillips was past his best when he joined Lincoln City. His Imps' career was not the happiest for the player because he seldom played due to a number of different injuries hence The Imps' faithful failed to see him at his best.

In March 2000 it was announced that Phillips would be released from his Lincoln contract to enable him to look elsewhere for first team football. However, two weeks later - due to an injury to Paul Miller - Phillips was recalled to the first team thereby proving how fortunes can change very quickly in football.

The recall was brief and it was quickly reconfirmed that he would leave Lincoln at the end of the 1999/2000 season.

Phillips ended his career in 2001 at non-league Stevenage Borough. He had a desire to coach or manage when his playing days ended and can often be seen playing in the Masters Tournaments for retired professional players.

LEE PHILPOTT
Lee Philpot - formerly of Lincoln City Football ClubBorn: 21st February 1970 in Hackney.

Position: left-wing.

Lincoln City career: 36+(21) appearances and 3 goals between July 1998 - May 2000.

Clubs: Peterborough, Cambridge, Leicester City, Blackpool, Lincoln City, Hull City, Weymouth, Harrogate Town and Hinckley United.

Lee Philpott failed to show his best form during the 1998/99 season as he struggled with injuries for much of that season after sustaining an injury on his first day at Lincoln City FC. Philpott had left Blackpool in July 1998 under the Bosman ruling to move to Lincoln, after the then Imps' manager John Beck had originally tried to sign him earlier in 1998 for £75,000.

The 1999/2000 season began with Imps' boss John Reames extolling the virtues of Philpott by calling him one of the best players in the third division. However, within two months, Reames had relegated him to the reserves for no apparent reason. From then onwards, he was only used as cover for injuries but when he did play he was often the best player on the pitch yet, the following week, he would be dropped. It came as no surprise, when in April 2000, it was announced by Reames that Philpott would not have his contract renewed.

He held talks with several clubs during summer 2000 and after being strongly linked to Notts County, he opted to join his former Leicester City manager Brian Little at Hull City.

After retiring from the professional scene, Philpott drifted into the non-league pyramid with Weymouth. He later became the player-assistant manager at Harrogate Town and indeed was appointed as caretaker-manager in February 2005.

Philpott made a playing comeback in July 2007 when he joined Hinckley United. However, Hinckley made a poor start to the 2007/08 season and Philpott was one of the victims when he was released by the club later that year.

MATT CARBON
Born: 8th June 1975 in Nottingham.

Position: centre-half

Lincoln City career: 78+(6) appearances and 11 goals between April 1993 - March 1996 & October 2003 - November 2003.

Clubs: Lincoln City, Derby County, West Brom, Walsall, Barnsley, New Zealand Knights and MK Dons.

Matt Carbon began his career as a trainee at Lincoln City in 1993 under the supervision of then Imps' youth team coach Keith Alexander and Steve Thompson, who was the then Lincoln City manager. Carbon gained a regular first team place after Alexander was promoted to Imps' manager, and he made 83 appearances for The Imps.

In March 1996, he was sold to Derby County in a £400,000 transfer, then aged just 20. This allowed him to play for the England Under-21 side after joining Derby.

Carbon stayed at Derby for 18 months before leaving to join West Bromwich Albion in a £800,000 deal. A move to Walsall transpired in July 2001 but injuries interfered with his Walsall career during the three years that he spent there.

Carbon made a shock return to Lincoln City in October 2003, when he joined on a month's loan. The idea was for him to regain his fitness but the plan was scuppered when he sustained another injury in his one and only appearance during the loan spell.

Walsall released Carbon in May 2004 and speculation naturally linked him to Lincoln City. However, this was too ambitious as several higher league clubs were also interested. In the end, Carbon opted for Barnsley, where he stayed until his release in June 2006. Speculation linked him to Lincoln City, Thompson' Notts County and Alexander's Peterborough United, however, he later tried his luck in the Australian League with New Zealand Knights.

Carbon's stay in New Zealand was troubled as he never made an appearance due to persistent injuries. In December 2007, he returned to England where he joined Milton Keynes Dons on a short-term contract.
