Over one million children write letters to Santa

The numbers are in and for the fourth consecutive year Canada Post's Santa Letter Writing program generated over one million letters from children in Canada and around the world.

"Letter writing remains the number one choice for children when communicating with Santa Claus," said Alain Guilbert, vice-president Communications for Canada Post. "With the Internet and other forms of communication available today, it is gratifying to know that the art of letter writing lives on through our annual Santa Letter Writing program."

Canada Post received 1,010,044 letters to Santa along with 30,096 emails during the 2004 program, and all letters were answered in the language in which they were written. In all, some 27 languages, including Braille, were used by over 11,000 Canada Post volunteers to respond to the children.

"I always enjoy reading the letters the children send to me," said Santa Claus. "With the help of my Canada Post 'elves', we try to respond to all the letters I get from boys and girls all over the world."

It is the 22nd year that Canada Post has participated in the program and planning for this year's Santa Letter Writing program is already underway.
